View Full Version : Men suck!

I've been playing with a particular group for about 7 years now as a loyal sub. Pretty much if they need me I play. I almost never turn them down and if I do its because I physically can't make it to the game. I have no trouble playing to the level of the group and I'd love to have a fulltime position with them. I've expressed that in the past.

Unfortunately for me, I'm a woman. Now while the league may have started out as a men's league it isn't exclusively male now. There are two other women that play with them on a regular basis. However, for some reason when it comes to goalies they always let men fill the spots first even when those men have been playing for a shorter time with the group than I have. Last year they even took the sub spot away from me and gave it to a guy that randomly showed up one week and wasn't even from town.

Now to an extent I understand what their argument is. Their league is really the only place for a beginner/intermediate men's goalie to play consistently, while I have women's hockey available. However, the only game experience that I get playing women's is when we travel for tournaments which only amounts to about 12 games per season.

What really pisses me off this time is that a couple of weeks back the guy running the league asked me if I wanted to play for them on Thursday nights during September. I said "yes" immediately and was excited at the prospect of having secured ice at least once a week for the next month. Now its 3 days from the first night of hockey and I've just found out that the other two male goalies picked Thursday nights to play so I'm sh!t out of luck. I have no problem with one of the goalies having his choice over me. He's fellow GLBB member Wasabi and he's been playing with this group for a much longer time than me. He SHOULD have first choice. However, its not fair to offer me a spot then thoughtlessly have it taken from me by a guy that has played with the league half as long as I have?

If ice time weren't so scarce around here I'd be half tempted to tell them to "shove it" the next time they ask me to sub.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

MG, your last sentence is the one that matters.....You have a simple choice to make: Do I have enough ice time playing women's league only...or, do I NEED to play every chance I can?
Are there other options available to you to get the ice time you want? I know the women's league here almost always has a guy or two playing net for them, as there simply isn't enough women goalies here. Maybe plan a weekend a month down here, I will do what I can to get you set up with a team. It's an option, and there must be others, just think about what they are. FYI: it happens in the guys leagues also. I was asked by the favoured team to play net this winter for them, which was something I had looked forward to doing, but they wanted me to pay to play. That has never been done before by this team, they got plenty of money, so I told them thanks but no thanks. I now play for the rivals, which asked me to play when they heard I declined to play for the other team, and are paying for everything. Keep your chin up....it will work out!

There are exactly 4 leagues/teams in my area: women's, DFHL, Adult league, and 50+. I play women's and 50+, but as I stated there aren't many women's games. DFHL is the league that I sub for. Adult league is really a bit beyond my level, but the call on me when they get desperate. So, there aren't any rival leagues that I can play in.

As for traveling.... as much as it sounds fun, its simply not possible on my paltry paycheck. The only way I could assure myself more ice time would be to move to a bigger city with more of a hockey culture. :(

Chin up MG! Just because the the guys running your teams are inconsiderate and unloyal, does not mean we all suck.

It's too bad there isn't more hockey going on in your area. I hope you get your opportunity.

If not reference Tanya Harding. Good Luck.

It's unfortunate but if you refuse to play it's the old "cut off your nose to spite your face" proverb. I played a ton of hockey last year due to injuries to other goalies and as tired as I was my game was great and consistent. I'm lucky to live in an area where there are a ton of rinks so it's hard for me to relate to your situation but I understand that craving for ice time to get your game out there and improve. In your position with limited ice time available I think you bite your tongue and let your frustration out here where people can lend an ear. You'll notice your game drops off as your ice time does so try to get every minute on the ice that you can, I always say my game was never better than when I wasn't working and played seven days a week!:D

Same round here - there are three rec teams. I play for one, train every week, but come game time I might have to split it with one of the others who occasionally turn up.
Another team has 4 goalies training as it is without me going down as well.
The third is a beginner team, and no disrespect but I'd like to play with/against a better standard really.

So I am kinda stuck - if it was based on ability and who is playing best I am confident I could pick up the #1 spot on at least 2, if not all 3 teams. But it's done on 'who turns up' and all that ****

It's true, some men suck,

Generally we call them gays or bi's (they occasionally suck too.)

We're in desperate need of another goalie...sure you wouldn't be opposed to moving up to New England...southern NH/Massachusetts?? :D

We have to travel down over an hour to play in the league we're in. It's a total pain, but we all carpool together when possible so it takes some of the hassle out.
Stinks that they lead you along and then say "nevermind we got a guy..."

Good luck! And if you are ever in the area, seriously we do need goalies...

It's really simple

you = Tonya Harding

all the rest = Nancy Kerrigan

I have a lady friend who plays goal. A couple years ago she was playing goal for a team in our summer league. The team lost their first couple games big. The captain told her they were getting a different goalie. They lost their next game with a guy in goal 10 to something. It wasn't her, the team sucked. They got thrashed for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, this is a common problem. It is a combination of these guys having an inflated sense of self and a resentment of women. Also, as my girlfriend who plays defense noticed, weaker men try harder against women because they think they have a chance at beating them to the puck or overpowering them. So, there is definitely some psychological thing going on with men and women playing together. Also, there are those men who hate women; or men who resent their wife at home and don't want to see a woman at hockey; or have some sort of mother issue and feel uncomfortable playing with women. Of course, there are also some old school men who don't think women are equal. No, I'm not a qualified psychologist but, I am just speaking from observations.

One thing you might try is skating out also. You will get more ice time opportunities and you can improve your skating. During the summer I skate out more than I play goal.

That so sucks! When in lived in the Oregon area, the local league would only allow me to play goal in the beginner league. They had never seen me played but I had seen the league and felt the risk of injury was great as most of the huge guys were just learning to skate. I held my ground and finally found a spot when a new team formed and were in need of a goalie.

It is too bad none of the teams you sub in could stand up for you and request you as their regular goalie.
