View Full Version : Any Possibility of a new Battram C/A design

Not that there is anything wrong with the current one. In fact I currently use a Vaughn V1 C/A very similar to Battrams, and love it. I've just been hearing rave reviews about the Vaughn Epic and was wondering if Battram might have some new similar plans on the horizon.

We are always exploring new equipment, however currently right now we are pushing just to keep up with the current orders in order to maintain a 3 - 4 week delivery time, that I usually do not have time to sit down and come up with anything new until the end of the hockey season! I have seen the Epic and it is indeed a very nice unit!

I'm also torn between the Vaughn Epic and ordering custom from Scott right now. They're about the same price (Epic is $20 more) but if I want anything custom on the Epic I'm waiting 8 weeks.

i think that a great c/a would be a cross between a brown and brians :)

Where can you get an Epic that cheap?

that I will have to see...$399 CAD is cheap but shipping to the US would make it about the same as GMs site.

I looked at an Epic recently and it is basically the same as the 5500 I used for a time. It's not a bad base to start with. It looks like Vaughn added some side flaps, larger shoulder floaters and a bigger sternum pad. Oh, and they made it a lot flashier for all you kids out there. :D

I think in some ways you're right, but I found the Epic to be much more comfortable out of box than the 5500 was. The material it's covered in is different, making it not only more flexible but lighter. I also think it's a better fitting unit than the stock 5500 was. There are perhaps a few similarities though.

I tried on a pro return epic at the local starscenter today and it was heavy... but that might have been just me, it seemed very protective.

What about a hybrid between the actual Battram and the H5? Keep the actual Battram arms and mix it with the Battram apron and the H5 shoulders.
I mean the legal version of the H5.

I wear a V1 and like it well enough, but would like it to be a touch thinner in the shoulders and chest as I feel a little round at the front and would rather feel more flat. Maybe I'd just need to customize a 5000 a little to get to where I'm thinking as it is close.

i've heard from a couple of people that there is an exposed part just under the chest protection near the arm pit they have been hit a couple of times. Maybe an improvement there with a new epic-styled battram?
I was thinking maybe a square design at the bottom of the "apron" ala Koho 590 style...

I still don't get how people can get hit there??? Except if you're not where you're supposed to be and/or not facing the puck while not in your stance... I don't know. I even took off some of the side protectors and never got hit there.
When playing goal, you should always have your hands in front of you. That covers everything.

I really have to 2nd chakal's comments.
i understand some wrap around the rib area. But really, A full body wrap is completely unnecesary. in fact, you really wouldn't want the C/A to wrap all the way to th armpit and around. it would be very restrictive and might get in the way of you sealing your arm against your side.
if you're facing the direction of the puck, at no time should you be hit behind the armpit

I posted this in the C/A thread in the Gear Talk forum last night:
Ok, I've finally figured out why I keep getting stingers on my Battram C/A on the side of my chest:

Notice the yellow highlighted area... there is no block in there, just material, no foam. That's where I've been getting popped.
That spot isn't that crazy a spot to get hit....

The Pro Spec Battram CA I saw posted looked good.
Mine has a higher than normal neck line and extra rib protection.
I really like these mods but the next CA i get.. i will order from Scott.
My current one was a "new" used unit. and those are the mods the buyer asked for.
I would like the higher neckline but made of neoprine.. I love that stuff on my combo.
Now that my CA is adjusted properly the neckline doesnt hit me in the throat and i have the most amazing claval coverage with the CA and combo then any other i have had before.

One of the things I like about my Battram C/A is that when I look down, my mask actually goes in behind the C/A neck protection (where it says BATTRAM on the neck).
I think it would be a great mod on my next C/A to get a larger collar on the C/A.

Gregan,
I made the fix to the upper body today!
It was as simple as what you did...
I put a piece of triangular 1/4" HD foam in that area... one wouldnt even know it is there unless you feel for it!

Awesome Scott, glad you fixed it up, I knew you would.
I'm still up for a pair of gloves, I've just got to find some time to get a decent graphic put together!!! (working long hours these days)
