View Full Version : No Goalie - What to do?

This happened to my night league team on Wednesday and previously once in the summer.
One team's goalie doesn't show up. Apparently our league does not have any rules stipulating that both teams must have a goalie to play. The team without a goalie plays six skaters the whole game, but has an open net. We lost a game this summer in this fashion. The other team did a good job keeping the puck away from us in the neutral zone and their end. When they had the puck in our end, it was essentially a power play.
Wednesday night we won 9-4, but were out-shot 54-26. I was so gassed in the second period that I was seeing stars! They employed the same tactic, and my team was "uninspired" without a goalie to shoot on. They passed up multiple scoring opportunities by passing, and being good sports, would not shoot much when the other team put a skater between the pipes (we all have to go to work in the morning, right?).
What do you all think should be done? I would like to propose a rule that states: If a team cannot put 5 players and a goalie on the ice within five minutes of the start of the game, they must forfeit (1-0). Play would then continue in a mutually agreed upon manner. For example, each team could get equal time shooting on the one available goalie.
I'm open to suggestions. By the way, this is a team league, as opposed to my morning league, which is an individual league. When one goalie doesn't show there, the league admin takes the blame and the game goes in the standings as a tie.

This is no different than if they decided to pull their goalie at the beginning of the game. It sucks and makes for a crappy game but it shouldn't be a forfeit.
In our league though, if the goalie doesn't show they will still play with 6 skaters but our team isn't allowed to take slap shots (which I think is kind of weak).
But in any game with only one goalie, the game can either go two ways
1. the team with the goalie just keeps putting the puck in the net (whether the goal counts or not as in "they must hit the post to score") and this demoralizes the other team such that they stop trying.
2. The team with the goalie doesn't see any challenge in trying to score so they stop trying and you end up losing a very winnable game.
1 always seems to happen in shinny and 2 in league games.
I would rather go home than play ina game with only one goalie.

Don't know what you would do for your league standings, but: To keep those that are there playing and interested, you could always play a 3 on 3, 4 on 4 type of blue line game in front of the goalie that is there.

Not sure if your league follows USA Hockey rules but, straight from the rulebook.......
Is a team allowed to play a game with six players and no
goalkeeper?
Yes. Rule References 203(c & f).
A team may opt to play the game with six players and no
goalkeeper. However, the Referee and the Coach must be
aware that no player is allowed to have the privileges of the
goalkeeper. If the team has no designated goalkeeper on the
roster, this is the only option. A temporary goalkeeper may
not be used unless he has replaced a designated goalkeeper
who has participated in that game and is unable to continue
playing..

in my league, if the goalie don't show, they give you 15 minutes where the league will try and get a goalie from the arena, if they can't. the game is forfeit

I have lost more games than I can count where we had a goalie and the other team didn't. We couldn't ever get the puck out of our zone.

5 skaters on each team and put a cone in the back of the net.
And yes, I have lost to the cone. :o

i have lost too many games for the same darn reason.
when i face a team with no goalie i call a quick team meeting describing my past history facing teams with no goalie.
i tell em to forget the idiot player standing in net and let fly with the shots.
if he is dumb enough to sacrifice is body to a slap shot with out proper equipment, then that is his own decision.
since i started employing that type of speech, i havent lost a game to a team with no goalie.

I have had the same convo here as well, 4 times. No mercy to that team with no keeper. We had a game 2 years ago where the goalie showed up end of the first and wasnt on the ice till end of second and the score was 13-2 and he came in and we won 15-2 The goalie was pissed because the stat keeper put the goals under his stats... and of course there was no saves listed till the third ! lol
Teams here dont have their **** together... that is all there is to it, In the Instructional and D, and C leagues people show up more... but in the A and B leagues here no one shows... you might have a goalie and 6 skaters ! It sucks, and its the exact reason I won't play much in higher than C now.

When I was a skater, we had a goalie who got her ice times mixed up once and phoned someone that she would be really late. This was when I had subbed a couple of times in net, but was playing mostly defence.
The other team had driven an hour and a half to play us - so being polite I said "why don't we just play with six skaters, and I'll watch the net", just so we could get on with the game and not waste the ice. Yes, perhaps a bit idiotic in retrospect...
They could not score. This one chick kept smacking slap shots - probably figured she could scare me (ha! not likely). Best part though - she couldn't hit the net, and only managed a handful of wild, wide, chest-high shots. They did get a couple of shots actually on net before our goalie showed up, but I managed to stop them somehow.
That was pretty funny. And also the night my team decided I was nuts enough to be a real goalie. :D

Firstly this situation SUCKS!!! You really can't win because if you play normally (shooting as you would with a keeper) your opponents normally get whiney and if you ease up on them then the game is crappy and usually a lot closer than it should be, sometimes resulting in a loss.
Most leagues around here will call the game if the team can't get a goalie by the end of the first period. The teams that are allowed to continue without a keeper seem to have alot more success when they play 6 up instead of waisting a man playing net at least that's what I've seen in my experience.

This is exactly the reason that I love it when they allow slappers at tourneys. Most of these women wind up and don't get it anywhere near me. I say fire away!
As for no goalie, around here its usually 6 guys or posts/crossbar. I'm the type that would rather play with only one goalie than not play at all, but it does make for a disappointing game. I have a tendency to change my attitude toward the because it doesn't feel like a real game. Not that I slack off in my own play. I just don't get upset about the outcome.

We have a service in the GTA called "rentagoalie", I am one and I can tell ya, it is so nice to see the relief on players faces when they know that they have a decent replacement. Also it really sucks playing against a team with no goalie.

This is how i started goaltending, I was the only player stupid enought to stand in net with a player cage on.
I think your idea is horrible. everyone shows up but some inattentive goaltender, then you play the game and let the chips fall where they may. I've found that the goaltenderless team plays HARDER, better defense and usually pushes the other team into a tough spot.

So you are in favor of punishing the team with the goalie? The team without should be punished, unless the league is in charge of setting the teams. Unless I have mis-understood you.

what?
If you cant win playing 5 on 5 with a 6th player in thier goal, then you certainly wont win with a goaltender in there.....
WHAT?

Let them play. Six on five.... same thing as one long delayed penalty. :p

I saw a funny example of this Sunday night. The team that didn't have their goalie slapped a D man in net, busted ass and got one goal with in 2 min. Then iced the puck for the rest of the first period, LOL I do not know how the rest of the game ended up I had to start getting ready...

The problem is the sixth man does not stay in the net. He is free to roam and be another attacker.
They team with the goalie is unmotivated and (I'll admit) unwilling to drill the puck at player without goalie gear, so they pussy-foot around when they have possession of the puck, and are shorthanded when they don't.
I simply want there to be no chance for a team to win a game if they can't get a goalie to show up.
Maybe I'm just bitter. This is an "Over 30" league that allows under aged goalies. I'm 42; the next oldest keeper is 30, the others are all in their 20s. The younger guys don't seem to have the sense of responsibility to their team that us more "experienced" guys have.

aha that is where we are having a disconnect.
our league rules that the 6th man, who replaces a goaltender, is under the same rules as a goaltender in regards to the red line and covering pucks.
Your league needs that rule.
Timmaayy
10-02-2008, 02:25 PM
Our league doesn't allow the sixth man goaltender priviledges either. You can't smother the puck, etc. You're just that, the sixth man... meaning you can skate end to end if you want.
As far as forfeiting or not, it's a game time decision by the captains. If they want to play that way ( sans goalie ) they can.

Your league needs that rule.
On that point, I agree. I'm going to see what I can do about it. I suspect this will not be the last time it is an issue. Stupid kids...
