I'm not sure if this is standard beer league stuff but playing tonight and the league I'm in has a 9 penalty rule, the first 5 penalties go normal the next 3 result in regular minutes (be it 2 or 5 whatever it may be) plus a penalty shot if you get a 9th the team forfeits the game and any goals scored are taken off and the only thing that's kept on the game sheet is penalties. So we're taking warm up and they usually give about 5 minutes for warm up and the other team's coach (it's beer league hockey not sure why they have a coach) complains that 5 minutes isn't enough or some garbage like that and 2 of his guys stay on the ice to make it 7 players on the ice until the ref (former WHL ref) tell them to get off or it's a penalty.
After the first period we're up 3-0 and we're playing pretty good I haven't faced many shots but the other team has taken 4 penalties already it all started because one player was playing with a visor that wasn't secured down at all just kept flapping around, the ref explained it was a hazard and may cause an injury so the player was asked to leave the ice and either tape it down get a strap or remove it.
So we've got 6 minutes left in the 2nd and they get setup in our zone d-man takes a shot I make a pad save but our D man doesn't get the stick of the forward in front of the net after 2 whacks he finally puts the 3rd in score is now 6-1 for us less than a minutes later they take their 9th penalty game over. So with this being my first full year of playing goal (I'm alternating games with a friend on the team) I get my first official shutout as cheap as it is. The Ref told us to email the league and ask for our money back for the game because it was such a horrible game.
Anyone else every experience this sort of shutout before or is my league running an odd rule?

As a side note I don't feel like I got a shutout because I let in the 1 goal........for the goalies that have had this happen did you feel the same way?

Odd is hardly the word that I use to describe that rule. Sprawl is much closer by labeling it bizarre.

I guess on paper a shut out's a shut out but you know the truth. When I used to play forward I was the best at getting garbage goals. Even the ones that deflected off my bum and went in counted as mine - know what I mean?

In my league, they award a penalty point. Win, lose or tie the team with the least penalties gets an extra point.

Every team needs a good garbageman.

I wouldn't consider it a shutout anymore than I would consider a 1-0 forfeit a shutout when the other team doesn't have enough players to start the game.

Non Contact Hockey League - Calgary (http://www.nchl-calgary.com)

to be fair I think they have it setup like to keep the games from possibly getting out of hand, plus they also have a 1 game suspension once you get 30 penalty minutes in a season. and after looking at the game sheet the 1 player took 29 minutes on his own the team took 12 penalties for 51 minutes.
