View Full Version : Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...

It got even worse...

My team is 0-6 going into Christmas break, and we've been getting crushed. And I'm running on 0 in confidence. I'm supposed to be the starter of my team and one of the upper goalies in the state, and I've been playing like sh*t, worse than sh*t. Here's my last three games...

4th game of the season: We're playing a team we could possibly beat, I get my 4th start in a row. Thru the first two periods, 1-0 and we're down. I had 1 goal on 19 shots. Then I collapsed in the 3rd, I let in 5 goals on 12 shots. I got pulled with 5 minutes left in the period. I got off, went into the tunnel, and threw my stick and helmet off the wall. Which made my coach mad, and he sat me the next game.

5th game of the season: I got benched because I flipped after playing like sh*t in the game before. We lost 7-3, coach played the other two goalies.

So thing have been sucking enough, and my save percentage has dropped to a .855 in the past three games.

Last night: I get the 5th out of 6 starts. I actually feel great and ready to go. The first 15 second of the period, one of the players on the opposing team takes a slapshot dump in from a little before the blue line closest to me...I have my paddle down, ready to stop it, it takes a small skip and goes through the smallest hole ever, and into the net. The crowd just went silent, kind of like...'we're embarrassed to be watching you.' Then I let in a crap back hander from a not so great angle. Then the 3rd goal was a one timer close in, and it pretty much went through me. And the 4th goal, they actually deserved that one. But it was 4 goals on 10 shots. I got pulled between the 1st and 2nd.

And now I'm here.....Had high expectations from my team and from myself, and I'm playing horrible. I was planning on juniors after this season. If I'm ever going to get close to that, I have to stop playing like a bender:confused:

hey, chin up. it really sounds rough. it sounds like your team isn't helping you out much either. tell them that if they wanna start winning, that they have to help out and not be lazy bums watching you get slaughtered.

And the game after the holidays, my numbers continue to go in a dismal spiral into the dirt. My save percentage and GAA are pathetic and at this point, impossible to save.

Even after the ridiculous shot count the other night. I got credited for 30 shots, when I must have had around 50 to 60. I had six shots in the opening minute of the game. And I gave up 7 goals and got pulled with 5 to go. But it wasn't all bad, the first two period I was playing the game of the season. It was 3-1 going into the 3rd, and guess what happened. My team abandoned me. In the first ten minutes of the period, they scored 4 goals, none of them were cheap, either. The first goal was a rebound, I took it off the pad from a shot from the point, they got the rebound. It was a power play goal for them. Next, a 2 on 0, I stopped the initial shot, but it squeeked thru a little and the following player tapped it in. Then the next goal, a 5 on 3, with us being short handed, the shot gets stopped in front of me, as I'm sliding one way, and the player goes the other way with it, I almost slid back, but I didn't have much of a chance. And the fourth, another 2 on 0, passed it across and they tapped it in. We called a time out, I got pulled with 5 minutes left in the 3rd. The junior goalie went on to let in 2 goals on 3 shots. We lost 9-1.

If I can't get signed by a junior team this spring, I'm in some deep sh*t. I can't go on like this, I need to be with some real players.

What do you want us to say? **** happens to everyone.

I've had one of the worst hockey years on record in my life, since moving up to Dawson Creek in March '08. Went from playing 6+ times a week, continually improving to where I was being asked to play very high tier levels in both roller and ice in the coming year to playing only drop-in 2x/week where no one gives a rat's ass and we're lucky to have 10 guys show up, and the odd league game with a CRAP team when I fill in for a buddy. I haven't played to the level I expect myself to be at in *10* MONTHS.

Do I make a thread about it? No. If it was THAT big a deal that it was affecting my life, I'd hire a goalie coach or make a huge effort to improve myself to get where I want to be.

Insulting everyone isn't going to get you jack, pal. Besides, from the above it already sounds like you ARE a bender like the rest of us, except your attitude sucks worse. Enjoy.

But here's the thing between me and you. You suck, you can suck in front of no one and no one cares. I've been talking with junior teams. But here's my problem, it doesn't look good when I'm not playing well, while I'm talking with junior teams and they're keeping tabs on me. So you comparing yourself to me is irrelevant because you suck. You really suck. I don't know how old you are, but if you're over 16 and you're using tiers to describe your level of play, you must really suck. If you were half way decent you would be playing junior or college, but you can't because you suck. But you're probably 33 or 34 judging by the number at the end of your name. So to make a long story short, you suck, you're a duster, and you play beer leagues. Which really means you suck. You can do terrible every game with a bunch of a 40 year olds wearing cages and skating a mile per hour, and guess who gives a ****...NO ONE because you suck and I'm on the radar for four junior teams around me. I need a quick way to get some confidence back, you can suck all you want because no one cares and you're not going anywhere because you suck.

I was just seeing if there were any easier ways of breaking out of slumps. But I've played well the last two games. I was just wondering why I sign on like once a month to no responses. Just wondering if you guys were having a tough time relating because of lack of experience or if you just only reply to the people with 1,000 posts or more.

Thanks croy...

Like Dre, this year kinda sucks.:p Last year, filled in with one REALLY top flight group who had one guy hurt and the other out of town at different times. Great hockey! I also played with a different very good group every time they needed a sub, which was once every week and a half or so. Played with a generally average bunch twice a week, but they had a good turnout.

This year, every goalie in town has stayed healthy, which is great:), but things have slowed down for me. My league team had 13 guys but was short on talent and turnout, and folded when we played three games with five and me, and one with four and me. Guys just stopped showing up. The guy that "ran" the team did nothing to communicate with anybody about schedules or commitment, but wasn't shy about insinuating that losing was somehow my fault.

My average but really fun group all work together, and this year the mill they are at moved everybody's shifts around, meaning half the turnout of last year.

In a small town, unless you grew up with guys you still play with, you're lucky to find a spot unless it's at someone else's expense. You can be better than every goalie it town (not that I am), but guys stay loyal to goalies that've been loyal to them, and rightfully so.

What Dre and I are going to do is put together our own ice time next year, get twenty guys, divide them up skillwise, and play that way all year. Nothing at stake but bragging rights. Often, that's the most fun you'll ever have.

KOTC: This is a relatively small board that's still evolving. Calling guys "benders" because you didn't get fifty responses to your plight is incredibly bush.
You won't last in Junior, if you even get a shot, because you're not as good as you think you are, the guys scoring on you are not as good as you want to believe, and your attitude is that of a clumsy fat chick who thinks her teacher is to blame for her not getting into ballet at Juillard. You're not a symapathetic figure because in a team game, you still think it's all about you.
There's always beer league, if you can afford ankle supports.

Last spring at 14 I got invited to my first junior camp with the Northern Junior Cyclones. I've already gotten a chance. I could have played with them on their developmental team where I could have gotten called up or just stayed down there playing AAA teams around New England and Canada. But I went with high school for now because it isn't going to be practical until I can get my liscense. And I'll probably play jr b after this season.

'Team game.' Right now it isn't team game for me, I'm looking out for myself. And it's not going to be a team game for me until I have college scouts in the stands, and I'm with a team that has 17 other players that are going to play college, and some pro.

BTW, apparently this isn't such a small board since I got like 4 responses after insulting you all in about...30 minutes, than I got in about a month

Seriously, I'm not trying to just be mean, but that attitude is not going to work.
a) You're not going to have much fun.
b) Your teammates aren't going to go to the wall for you.
c) It'll show, and be a reputation that follows you around.

Play your best, be a team guy despite the record, and you WILL get noticed if you're good enough.

King? Perhaps you should change your on-line name to Jack, as in ass. You certainly are acting like one. Not only here by attempting to cut us all up but in your rink too - slammin' your gear against the wall? What's that about?

I can appreciate your passion but you need to gain control and focus. You should start with an open apology to us "benders, dusters, beer leaguers and 40 yr old guys and gals who suck" and you will if you care to demonstrate a little class.

I highly recommend you stop fixating on your numbers, don't even look at them for the next two months. I know in your head you are questioning each and every shot as it leaves the shooter's stick, thinking of how the ressult of that shot will effect your percentages.

Best of luck. Let us know how things turn out.

fine i'll chime in, i played semi pro hockey in Europe for several years started when i was 17, heck i still get payed (30 now) and i don't even play the highest level no more. and i played 9 years for the dutch national junior team getting 1 silver medal in pool B (WC) and 1 gold in pool C (EC).
hope my credentials are high enough for you.
not that it matters to me or the other benders, i just assume you need credentials to accept a POV.

Now,
Anybody can get in a slump, my team sucks this year, but then again i had one bad game this year right before the Xmas stop, i felt bad about it, the one day my team actually played decent and i failed, so i took the holidays to work on my ethic and issues i had during the game and the start of the season. when i get off games or practices, i rerun what i learned and where i failed, i use motivational words and stick to them, had a semi bad game in the beginning we lost on the shootout and i let in 3 of the 5 penalties, i wrote "je maintiendrai" (i shall overcome) on my sticks, it is the national slogan for Holland and quite fitting for the situation. next game we won 3-1 i had a solid game with 35 SOG, i did overcome. but only because i'm willing to see myself as a human with flaws and only because i accepted that i'm not as good as i would like to be or once was. i overcome by working really, really hard and not by getting frustrated.
your post reeks of frustration, you are 14-15 maybe it's puberty calling.

A good goalie can carry his team and a good goalie is noticed even if he's on the losing end most of the time, blaming a team for your slump is as easy as stealing candy from motogoalie.

Calling everybody here a hack is really class act, and sadly most of us already see where you will end, you sadly don't know this until it will hit you.

You want to get somewhere, you work hard both on hockey as on social skills.

You're right KOTC, I'm 27, and have been playing in net for 5 years now, after an ankle injury that kept me out of sports from 18-22. I must suck, but with that attitude, guess who really sucks? Not me. Game in and game out, I have fun playing, regardless of the turnout or performance I put in.

As for the 16 years old comment, at that age I was a B.C. gold, Canadian silver, and North American bronze medallist, tapped and invited (all expenses paid) to go to Japan to represent Canada in the World championships for an individual sport much more full contact than hockey... so I know a little something about success on a large scale, and I know with that attitude even in an indivdual sport, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

But be my guest, call me every name in the book, you're 16, Junior scouts and teams are calling you... you know what's up. ;)

You're a true beaut, unreal post!! Anyways breaking out of a slump is mostly a mental thing. A slump can happen when you are playing bad or if you are under the impression that you aren't playing well. How to get out of it? Simple: Change things up: get a new twig, new tapejob, strap your pads a different way, listen to some music (if you don't already) before your game. If you had a bad game and you did things the exact same way the next time you got to the rink what makes you think its going to have a different result? Just keep plugging away and it'll come broski. This summer I've got two JR A camps (in the OPJHL) and one with a JR C team if it doesn't workout, so i'm in the same boat as you. I wouldn't even worry about any "bad attitude" responses as none of these people know you in real life and they have no gauge as to what you are really like.

Took me a while to see this. This response will be two parts. One with me wearing my Moderator hat, and the other with my professional opinion as a armchair athlete.

Mod:
From the rules.

1. a)Flaming is prohibited. It is one thing to refute someones ideas with a well educated argument, But another thing to attack someone personally. It will not be tolerated. No discriminating against any user based upon Age, Join Date or post count is permissible.
1. b)This is a friendly forum, we can tell when people are having some friendly banter, but outright rudeness and being snippy at people just for the sake of it will not be condoned. Please treat everyone the way you wish to be treated.I think you need to take some time to lurk, view the board and see how people interact with eachother. We are a smaller board. 1200 members, 300 regular readers. Not some giant internet message board where people can play anonymous and act like tards just because it's the cool thing to do. The attitude you are giving people is 100% unwelcome here, and consider this your warning. posting something similar in which you attack any member based upon your self preconcieved notion of your own elite status will earn you a ban, length to be determined based upon the severity of the comments.

And nwo for my Armchair athlete opinion:
you're too high on yourself. you've emotionally set yourself up here. it is clear by your attitude and commentary that you believe yourself to be a top tier goalie who is destined for greatness. Problem is, it's clear you're not. you've elevated to the next level only to find you're being lit up like a christmas tree and you dont know why. I think, at your age, and at where you're playing, you need to take collection of your ability and maybe look into a different level of play, or working your ass off that much more.

here's some reading that might be beneficial to you:

also, the attitude of "me first" won't fly. you might get the first call, heck you might make the team based upon your ability, but you might just find that you start finding your way onto the bench just so the team doesn't have to put their trust on someone who's not out for their best interests

No i'm semi serious, status is a state of mind that last as long as you are liked, as soon as you fumble once you could fall from grace, if you take the world serious you could get really hurt emotionally, if you look at it like this is a sign i should overlook WTF am i doing and start working on that, then i think one would be on the right path.

acceptance is the first step.

I think you need to take some time to lurk, view the board and see how people interact with eachother.

I think, at your age, and at where you're playing, you need to take collection of your ability and maybe look into a different level of play, or working your ass off that much more.

also, the attitude of "me first" won't fly. you might get the first call, heck you might make the team based upon your ability, but you might just find that you start finding your way onto the bench just so the team doesn't have to put their trust on someone who's not out for their best interests

Sprawl, I'm not in over head. I'm playing in varsity high school as a sophomore. Last year as a freshman I was 4th in the confrence overall. Had a 32 shot shut out my second start. I'm not in over my head.

I also played with the Northern Junior Cyclones a couple times over the summer, at 14, and I played well. I also played Tier I U16 split season before high school season started. It isn't like a need to drop down a level, I just wasn't playing well.

And my attitude getting me benched...Doubt it. In front of coaching staff I'm a total team guy. Do you honestly think I tell the coaches I'm here for me? Not a chance. I'm here for the team, I want to win, and I'll do anything for the team. When I play with good players who are as good as and better than me, I'm more of a team guy than when I'm with a bunch of benders who embarrass me. Right now I couldn't give a crap whether we win or lose, I just need to look good. Colleges don't scout high school.

When I'm on a junior team I'll care about wins because the better we are, the more attention we get.

I'm good friends with most of the junior and midget players I've met and played with, because guess what...They're the same as me. I'm the one in the locker room with them, you are the ones reading their interviews in the newspaper.

i think it's the attitude problem hurting your game to be honest. you might be great. the next Brodeur!, and i don't think it's externally hurting your game if you're putting on a good face.

But it might be hurting you yourself. you're thinking "i'm great, i can do this, I can do this, I can do this". and then a couple bad bounces don't go your way. you start questioning that, it gets into your head. you start letting that mentality affect you, yuor game therefore suffers.

I think what you need to do is centre yourself emotionally. get back in control and remember that you try your best, and thats what matters. Remember it's a game. It's fun, and from that yo'll probably see that you'l get back "on your game" so to speak.

But the one thing you need to do is realize that no matter what level goalie people play, there are issues they face. Age can help you. take advice, even us "hackers" or "benders" give you. While some of us can't physically do what we need to, we're not idiots and we do know the game.

A thought occurred to me....

Perhaps instead of concentrating on how good you are and how your skills are wasting away playing for a bad team, may be you should examine the parts of your game that you could improve. No matter what level you play at, pee wee, beer league, or NHL, there are always improvements that can be made. And as long as you've got pucks flying at you there is work to be done.

I will refer you to this thread, http://goalielife.com/showthread.php?t=535, because Keeks, having been there and actually lived the dream, says it much better than I ever can.

If I'm ever going to get close to that, I have to stop playing like a bender:confused:
soooo your attitude is or isn't big guy?

KingOfTheCrease

That could have gone either way. Some coaches like to see fire in players. I don't regret it. I shouldn't have gotten sat for that. I was mad at myself, not the team. What was the big deal about?

My coach should really get a glass stomach so he can see where he's going when walking around with his head up his ass.

At least I show I give a ****, I break sticks in practice, too. Bottom line, I hate letting goals. That should be a redeeming quality, that I strive to be the best

If you are to the point of breaking sticks in practice, then you have already lost.

Your entire focus is on scouts and making a good show. You've missed the point. With the attitude that you have displayed on this board, it seems somewhat apparent that you have reached the apex of your abilities. You are not likely to improve as a goaltender until you can improve as a person.

While your blabberings have been fairly amusing, to say the least, I think it is time to give it up. You have approached this subject from the wrong angle and there is no way to recover.

You've asked for advice on how to break a slump, and have thrown back all that we have given. None of us truly believes that you have the talent to move to the next level, and personally I am offended on behalf of all of the "benders" that regularly contribute to this forum.

We've done what we can to help you, but are not of a high enough caliber to assist, so please begone.

The picture you are painting right now of yourself is probably one that would wind up in the trashcan in many coaches and scouts offices.

wait...... sooooo you are a good student..... i see where you're going..... but you're attitude on the ice, and what seems to be off the ice, is horrible. im not saying be a better person, but be nicer to people, and don't over react, just chill out, and take a breather. let in a goal in practice, laugh it off, or say to the guy, "lucky shot" and laugh. don't break sticks. not only will you look like an ass, but your coach won't like it at all. and scouts won't like to see that you are a horrible sport. focus on your attitude, and your game. and if you know what scouts like, i DOUBT they'd like that. SO STOP BEING A BABY. let one by, shrug it off, now you know you have to get in the zone, cause you aren't getting a shutout. let a second one in, now you have to step it up again. i play on a horrific team, and i want to just flip out on them, but i hold it back so i stay on the coaches good side. so hopefully you take some of this to heart, i don't care what it takes you to even do it, but its the only way you'll get respect around here, and on the ice.

So you do have something to worry about?

Nah I am just nitpicking grammar, because aint is a plague in Pittsburgh.

Anyways, here is my .2, and please take it with a grain of salt.
Instead of flipping out and breaking sticks and throwing masks, if you give up a goal, just skate it off/laugh/forget about it. This shows more maturity than anything. Hockey is a game of emotion, however for a goalie, you are best off not showing any emotion, at least in my opinion. If your coach benched you for breaking a stick and throwing a mask, then breaking sticks in practice, while good intentioned sends the wrong message, because he is looking at you like you are a spaz.

Obviously you have some talent, but just relax, a cool, relaxed outward appearance will do wonders when scouts take a look at you.

Yeah I am a total bender, and I suck, so if you want to say whatever to me its probably true. But hockey is a game, enjoy it, don't worry about scouts, junior teams, etc, have fun, don't go all ninja and flip out and totally wail on a guitar then swallow a folded up frisbee every time you get scored on.

straight up embarrasing!!!

I agree, this kid's unreal. Talk about needing a glass stomach.

I have read your post and have attempted to digest everything you have said.

I have scouted at the NHL level and deal with USHL, NAHL ,WHL, OHL ,QMJHL, CCHA etc scouts DAILY.

Based on where you are currently playing I deduced who you are and contacted some "people" I know in your neck of the woods.

Based on all my research I can confidently conclude that you will be playing for
keeks, you kill me!

Ok this kind of really trips me out. Did you contact Delassio or Coach Pasq or something

I spoke to a high level scout in your area who knows Delassio and Coach Pasq, without a doubt they felt your talent level would surely impact your future. Without question, and I concur, I see you playing

Although I still have a tough time believing you went through all that trouble to figure this stuff out. And last night I got home late and was posting at like 1am so I was spaced out and would have believed anything. But I'm still kind of thinking about it.

If you did, what did the scout say

He said you have horrible grammar and should finish High School.

Oh and cut your hair, he said it was getting to long.

I believe you mean 'too long.'

Also, you would not capitalize the words 'high school' because that by itself is not a proper noun.

Now go away.

Hey guys. I just want to say sorry for telling KOTC to come over to this board. He did the exact same thing on the GEW a while back and it took a few people telling him that he would go nowhere for him to settle down.

This was his original post on the GEW that started it all off. (http://www.goalie-equipment-world.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1053)

Also he has called Keeks a psycho on the GEW for talking to some of the scouts in his area.

KOTC might want to realize that any conversation from an NHL goalie coach to his local scouts is probably a good thing.

He may also want to realize that he is only hurting himself and any chances he has at a higher level of play by running his mouth or in this case his keyboard. The hockey world is much smaller than he realizes.

That said....he is supplying us "benders" with a wellspring of entertainment! :D

Yo I was joking about Keeks, not that the fact he tracked me down didn't weird me out...Anything else I had said was probably in the lines of correct. But I was not intending to offend Keeks. Although you seem to have taken some personal offense to it, but you're kind of a brute goalie so I hardly care. Sorry if I offended you keeks, I'm glad this offended you JHANDLEY.

Although G-E-W came out about the same result when I made a thread like this. The only people I would listen to on that board would be SLOTS and slapshot98.

ALTHOUGH, and NHL goalie coach talked to scouts in my area, I couln't imagine it changed where I stand with them. He's never seen me play, and doesn't know me...

But he has seen the way you are acting on here, and trust me, That could have more of a detriment to your career than your ability, or lack of!

If I were coaching and had to select one of two players both of equal skill, size and ability, one is a self centered jerk and the other is someone who is calm, relaxed and a team player, who do you think I am going to select???

Me because I'm dirty...

But seriously, I come off differently online. I'm pretty relaxed, not too loud. I'm usually pretty nice to my teammates. Some times I just get really frustrated with losing and having to play on one of the worst teams in the state because of where I live. And some people just piss me off when they say I have a bad attitude and they don't what they're saying. I'm pretty rarely outwardly mean to anyone. I just come off differently, and people come off differently to me. You would have to meet me to know what I'm about.

Which begs the question....

Why the hell do you have to bother us when you clearly don't GAS what any of us have to say or suggest to you? You are already an expert in your head. You have decided that you will fail because you can't get a fair shake from the scouts, but at least you've got your excuse. And you know what they say about excuses.....

KOTC if you honestly felt i would spend one minute of my time checking into you, you are very naive.

I can tell from the level you play at now and the level of your maturity that you will never play outside of highschool. This is a mortal lock.

I never take any personal attacks personally. For me it is entertaining.

alright. this has gone long enough.

i hope everyone had their fun. King, people have tried to give you sage advice. its yours to take or leave. I'm lockign this and i want everyone to take a minute and remember where you are. we're all comrades who play the same position on the ice. We share a bond. We are the "Crazies" that 22 other players on the ice look too for solidarity and being the one to bail them out.

King, I truly recommend you read the posts here that try to politely tell you what they think. even despite being called benders and told they suck, they continued to attempt to offer you quality and kind advice.

I'm not banning you. I have considered it. you are on thin ice as your attitude you've displayed here has seriously shown an example of what not being a team player is about. I'm not willing to lose valuable friends and forum members because your ego and attitude is more important to you than friendly advice.

I am locking this thread. And King, I highly recommend you look around at the peers around you and think about yourself 20 years from now. attempting to give advice to some 15 year old who thinks he's the best there ever is, ever was, and ever will be and he tells you you're a Hasbeen or never was that because he's not an NHL goalie he's a nobody. Take stock of what you have now and truly plan for the future.

Good luck is all i'll wish for you, because you'll need it.

if anyone has a problem with my decision, please PM me and i will gladly discuss it. but its time this ends here
