I got thrown out of my game last night - my first ever. We were losing 4-1 with about 2 minutes left. They play was coming down to my end and was blown offsides. Some idiot from the other team decides to ignore the whistle, take 2 more strides and unleash a slapshot at me from about 15 feet, hitting me in the dangler. I, of course lost my sh*t and as he skated past me and behind the net, introduced his head to the glass with my forearm, dropping him like a stone (my teammates said the forearm took him 6 inches off his skates). Of course, I got thrown out and my team lost, but afterwards, my team said they were all ok with it. I know I shouldn't have lost my cool, but I couldn't help it.

Should I have let my team mates handle it?

I don't know if you should have been thrown out. Probably would have been the same result in my league (if they considered it fighting) BUT you have to be allowed to defend yourself. If no one on your team was close and you were already losing... Why not nail him. A play like that can end up really hurting you especially if you let your guard down and he uncorks one at you like that.

I was warned by the ref in my league once when I was skating out I let a long shot go just after the whistle/horn for end of period. It was a ****ty shot and I just started the wind up and slowed down but couldn't really stop it. I apologized and all was cool.

Did the refs say anything to the other offender?

I think they threw me out as a precaution. The ref gave me a (believe it or not) a delay of game penalty and him an unsportsmanlike. This ref will sooner throw you out then give you a major, etc. This guy had plenty of time to either not shoot or to shoot the puck into the corner. He took two full strides after the whistle! I'll actually see this ref tonight - he'll mention something about it, I'm sure.

best bet is to go up to the ref, give him a pat onthe back and say 'good call'.

may seem silly to do, but might relax him a little insteadof thinking you're a goon, he might just thinkit was a one time loss of your cool

He's seen me play countless games and knows that I usually keep my cool. He'll probably tell me to relax and not do it again. We'll see.

I probably would have done the same thing:D

In regards to your teammates handling it, even after you did your thing they still should have been all over the guy. What that guy did is dangerous and unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

The question contradicts what you said about losing it. My assumption is that you were not in control enough to make that decision. In hindsight do you think they would have done anything?

Way, way back in the day I lost it during a city tournament championship game. Kid was cherry picking and I stuck to him like glue. He started to butt end me in the ribs with his stick, by the fourth one all I saw was red. Dropped my gloves chased his *** down and proceeded to pound on him in the center circle. Ref dragged me off the ice. It was worth it.

My dad was the ref. :D

Maybe give him a hug too. And hold his hand while walking through a meadow of perrywinkle in full bloom.

In hindsight, I think I had already made up my mind to retaliate when I saw him wind up for a shot - I was a little incredulous when I realized he was going to shoot. Then when it hit me in the dangler I just flipped. Otherwise I may have pushed him, but not try to put his head through the boards like I did.

Something tells me that maybe a beer would be more appropriate. :D

and then contemplate why Too many men on the ice is a penalty instead of a party.

you got to watch the temper, what he did was wrong but still. I was having a crappy game one day and we were down 4-0 in the third, this fella decides to snow me and bowl me over off a harmless play, i got so rattled that there was no call i snapped my goalie stick over the cross bar and threw it at the ref. got suspended for 4 games, and kicked out. haha sucked.

i never do it myself, just the occasional push and Hextall hack in the crease, but when someone shoots and rides past me after it was called dead, i just point at him and yell his number to my bench, followed by the words "i want him ****ing buried", you should see the look in their eyes most of the time.
My coach is a guy that used to be my D man when i played some higher level, he takes it to a new level, he hears me then goes to the biggest guy on my team points at the number i just shouted and makes gestures as if he's telling the dude to go on a headhunting trip. (sadly our biggest guy is also a very soft minded fellow, wouldn't hurt a fly, but with 6.5 he's pretty impressive) that helps too.
only times i will hurt you is if you run me and in are in the crease and i can reach your little ignorant head, i will pound on it.

pun.
