Mostly Aramid! (I just asked Stace to keep layering the stuff until all the cash was gone!)
It’s my hot-weather mask for roller, ice and field
To be fair, the design was almost entirely left up to Tony.
We started with a traditional cage and then changed to an SM90.
This initially presented some minor problems with the straps. Conventional tear-drop chins allow the fixing points to sit further forward ….and given the relatively small cheek piece to this mask, I guess it became a question of leverage?
Anyhow, this project was all about the Research & Development > and with some time to think, we went on to find the correct solution
Total order, research, design and build time was a little over 8 weeks – which is pretty amazing considering it’s virtually a new mask type
As always the back-plate is for left painting. As soon as I get it, I’ll post some comments on the size and fit

As for the originally posted combo it looks alright for a combo, but what happens if the top clip breaks and you don't have a spare?
Wouldn't it have been better to make it come back over the top and reclip back onto the harness or backing plate?

ref the chin-strap chin-sling thing < will wait and see how it fits.
I might add a cup and attach the backplate to the cage... will wait and see how it sits on my head first!
ref the top-clip - if it breaks I'll get it replaced. Stace is very good with the after-care stuff. However, it only has four points of contact rather than the 'normal' six (and I didn't want J-clips!!)
bc-30
04-04-2009, 12:45 PM
I think he means the top strap clip, not the cage clips, but why you wouldn't carry a spare, I don't know. As for the design question, I think he was asking why the top strap is isn't done in reverse, with the snap on the backplate like the lower straps instead of on top of the mask.
Moving Target
04-04-2009, 03:08 PM
Ah I see what you mean.
The top 'snap' is simply a loop and is not connected to the mask. The strap passes through it and cams the buckle against the mask
As you say, the only two snaps are on the botton of the backplate!
I'll post some photos ASAP!

This weekend I'm going to toy with a combo plug after I put the final touches on my modern one... MT and Stacey inspired me!
I think Iwould wear a combo if it was compy and like this, the Mages that I've seen seem kind of... thin in the forehead? Nothing against Sportmask, I like their products enough and I've seen plenty of buddies with theirs doing fine. I'll be quick to say the Mage was a brilliant concept.

Played today and it was awesome...
I wont bother talking about build quality as thats a 'given'; but the sight lines are superb and my aramid-specification means that the mask is very light indeed
Im going to stick with the chin sling for a few weeks and see how I get along with it.
My girlish 'Keannu Reeves' chin means that it did slip over the sling when I cranked my neck back; but shortening the top strap has over-come that problem
Having the two options will certainly help

First game last night... absolutely great
The SM90 cage is far more crowded than a normal non-HECC cat eye, but the whole effect was excellent.
Tracking the puck is much easier in this mask, especially on back-door passes and action behind the net.
The compact shape means that there is no rubbing on the CA and head movements are both fluid and easy.
Conversations with D-men are naturally very easy... and any practitioners of on-ice 'behavioral-reinforcement-technique' will find that they can fully verbalize long sentences of short syllable words!
I initially wore a dangler - but was confident enough to remove it in the second period - meaning that i could see my feet very clearly without a myriad of plastic and bars!
I took two mid-level shots to the head - one was a snapshot on a rebound to the temple and the second was a straight blast, that hit my cage whilst butterflying
Needless to say, the mask did its job and the whole percussion / impact 'thing' was non-existent. I must admit to feeling a little relieved as the 'CWD' jokes were doing the rounds on both both teams.... (although I would point out that at-least four different goalies tried the combo on afterwards)
The only 'weakness' in this mask will be the SM90 'off-the-shelf' cage. Its absolutely fine to wear but the only thing thats not been created by Stacey himself!!
Maybe thats a little unfair, but a couple of SM90 variants would now make this a very desirable helmet indeed. I trust Stacey's work implicitly - but don't trust any mass-produced junk! Time will tell :p
The cage is the only thing that needs refining IMHO ...and although Pun and I batted about some modifications, I wouldn't now choose to add a chin-cup either
The sling works well for me (although the option of a chin-cup would be welcomed by others) and the backplate/strap-set up is also fine
Pun suggested that the lower straps tie back to the mask (and not the cage itself) in order to give more adjustment to the chin-sling...
I agree with his observations, but still think that this is part of the retro-style that I was looking for; and thus part of its finesse! After-all, it is a custom shaped mask and was designed to fit my bulbous shaped noggin :p
My only other suggestion would be to consider a smaller back-plate? I deliberately asked Stace to give me a 'paintable' option - but a dinky backplate (like my Mach10 H) would be an ideal addition to the CWD
In-fact, I'm half tempted to order a second backplate just to see what its like!!
Score?
This is an ongoing R&D project, but I am willing to say this is a good 8.5 / 10.
The next few orders will be hard pushed to change the geometry of the mask and I can only think that the strap/cage connection will be refined - together with a more elegant SM90 (or ST90? *LOL* :p)

My 'personal test' is that the cage must cover my cricoid / cricothyroid muscle to warrant giving up a dangler

This would be my take on a HM30/50 style chinsling.
Novelties on this one, it has removable chinparts, so you can wash them.
it has 4 push buttons rather then 2 central one to follow the cage better and the thin plastic to keep everything nice and tight.
Between the cage and the plastic is where your elastic would run.

I actually bought that chin-sling, but it needs the MH30/50 to be fitted properly. I also looked at LAX chin cups too
The SM90 drop chin means that the 'cup' hangs in space and isnt effective

CWD update
This is a stunning mask! And it has only got better and better since I bought it IMHO
My only modification so far is to add some foam onto the top of the mask (ie the crown of the head) and to sew-down the straps in a fixed position.
I keep meaning to modify the chin sling (Stacey, Pun and I were talking about a sling-cup modification) but its been absolutely fine and never caused me concern.
Im currently playing in a summer-league with Pros and Semi Pros (think weak ECHL / OHL types) and been getting a few friendly shots to the head.
Nothing.... not even a feint ding/ring/ping/zing whatever...
Its virtually all aramid, but the Mach10 shape works very well in cut-down version.
As you can see from the pictures below, eye-line and movement are A1 quality and its become my main mask (even considering the lovely paint-job i had done on my Mach10.)
Its simply the best mask I've worn

The colored leather marks just fine (and it kinda looks like the Jokers crying) but the white - nada, nothing, zilch, zero

the joker cries for obvious reasons, mainly your art of goaltender.

strap buckles underneath the cage, 4 strap harness X shaped, round holes
hard chinpiece with strap and chincup attached to that.
It wasn't a poor attempt, it's obvious you don't get hit that much, so either you get very little icetime, very little shots on goal or very little shots on your gear which suggest you don't stop a puck.....

On topic, gonna send The Stace my mail today, sold a set of RBKpsII's and got the cash, now i need the mask.
so here's the ironic part, "MT, what would you change to it after using it for a while, or what have you altered?"
(yes, i'm asking you for reasonable advice....as weird as that might seem.)

1. I would add another clip to the cage along the vertical bar - a couple of slap shots in recent weeks (well, alot) and the cage is becoming a bit clicky
Nothing major, just an irritant. I just need to take the cage off and re-attach again. (or stop hitting things with my face)
2. Add a Stacey SM90 cage
3. I actually like the strap set up through the cage - but think thats theres opportunity to loop it through the cheek of the mask
nothing else IMHO

1, check, i need to relook your pics but i think i know what you mean.
2, Does the Stace already make them or not? that is the Question. Cheese bandit any word?
3, do you got a hard part in the chin area or just the soft material?
Cheers.

1. the cage squeeks a little in the clips.... nothing major
2. not yet, but soon IIRC
3. soft - basically the standard SM90 chin strap an foam
the Sportmask 'plastic' chin guard was their own Tim Thomas creation?

Would Stace be able to give me an approximate quote?
I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to custom masks though so I actually have a few questions. What exactly is a "Lip Model" and a "No Lip Model?" That being said...
Stacey Combo
Regular Certified Cage
Solid White
Round Vents
Head Size: 22.5"
Head Height: 8 and 1/4"
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 148 Pounds
Thanks!
Oh and MT, You said that you asked Stace to continue layering the aramid until your payment was all gone but does anyone know how a stock combo would hold up?

hey brendon,
I got a stage (stacey combo) too,
i got the MKII (second version)
I believe mine is the highest level of aramid (97%) advertised on staceys website.
Any mask he makes will hold out, but i must say the stiffer the combo the better due to it not being a continuous shell. plus it makes up for the cage, which off course is a bit heavier then a regular mask.
I also own the Spacetech mach 10, the stage and soon the space tech 900 (end of this month)
i didn't have to retire the spacetech mach 10 but after 5 years i decided it was time to get a combo and gearwhore some more.
best idea is to mail stace and ask him yourself.
All i can say is that i got hit hard in the stage and have yet to recieve even the slightest ringer.

Tempted to goto pickup tonight, but will probably just wait for my regular Tuesday night game tomorrow.
Adjusted to my head perfectly, putting on the eagle wide lexan dangler on it for more neck protection.
Thanks Stace!
Will have a regular review later....

first run tonight, vision was great.
the cup is smaller than my eddy cup and may switch it out. need to adjust the padding on the top as my head is weird shaped. :p got all the instructions from Stace to adjust.
it is light and again the vision is awesome.

I really like that, do you notice less heat build up in those too? The outside temp right now is 100 degree farenheit, the rinks here are getting pretty warm and the old Eddy has just gotten it's final paint job, she's a tired old gal. I'm trying to decide between the Eddy Vision, one of Ron's Coveted masks or now one of these, leaning heavily toward the Coveted but I like the looks of the Stacey.

Yes, it is very much cooler, having only cage around the bottom part of the mask ventilation is much greater.

Man, that's nice, I'd have to opt for the MarkII, although I prefer a sling over a cup, a thin sling at that.I could never imagine wearing a dangler though, that's the only reason I prefer a chin as part of the shell rather than just a cage. I do wear a collar but I don't expect it to protect from a puck too much, more from a skate. Too many holes makes it difficult to do a sweet paintjob but it might be worth it. Skating backwards a bit to cool down is tough to do when the play is in your end for minutes at a time.
Moving Target

Yeah Pun did a nice job.
I find the sling makes for a very comfortable experience - as you can talk easily and control your breathing more.
However you do need a rather pronounced chin to keep it it place(!) and I needed to adjust the straps to make sure the mask didn't slip down.
'Masked' (here on the GLBB) is convinced that the cut-down Mach10 H produces a flat spot on the forehead but I'm adamant that it fits correctly and none exists.
I currently wear the Mark1 for ice, field and roller hockey... and if it can be 'improved', its for you to take forward!?!
Looking at the specs, Willy has opted for something like Mark1.5? Perhaps you should PM him and Punisher and see what the Mark3 might have?
This whole Combo-Stage 'thing' was started as an R&D project with Stacey - and aught to be brought-on by each new order.

I wasn't aware that the Stage was a cut down Mach 10/H - they are purpose built moulds.

I'm thinking Mark II strapping but with your Mark I vent holes and I like the idea of a chin guard as part of the shell ala Coveted but a bit thinner and more of a V-shaped drop, in line with the cage a bit . Difficult to see how the backplate is in relationship to the shell once worn but I'd prefer a smaller one for better cooling. You guys did the hard parts, the rest is simple refinings.

Great, just needed a readjustment again. LOL.

Heat was greatly dispersed, neck and lower part of my fat head was cooler.

First league game last night, team was not very strong so only had about 15 shots. 2 of them were taken right off my cage of the new mask.
Its almost redundant, but the vision is great, the two shots were no issue, great heat dispersion.
Still getting used to the new weight and fit, but am already very pleased.
