View Full Version : Something NEW is coming!!!
Scott Battram

We have been hunkered down over the last several months, pooling all of our resources, painstakingly researching and developing into the wee hours of the night, making pattern after pattern to create a new line...(well not really but it sure sounds good doesn't it and the other company's claim the same, so why cant I have some fun too)
Actually I got an idea this past Friday night to make a new pad model so first things first, I needed a graphic... since we all know that graphics are the essential part of the pad I knew this one had to be killer! so I went to my right hand man who created what I think is the best stock graphic in the business and it even looks cool too and with the right goalie using it may even stop some pucks!
Now the rest was up to me... with pencil, paper and rulers in hand the creation process began... I needed to come up with something that would rival what I think to be the best pad on the market today... After cutting the pad on Sunday night I started the sewing Monday and went into Tuesday morning to finish it... (not bad, new pad from paper to reality in 4 days! and based on the prototype there are only 3 minor changes I need to make...
I believe I have achieved my goal, and soon this new model will be visible here at GOALIELIFE.COM first... I promise it will be worth the wait to see this new model that will be a little bit different than our current lines...
Blocker and Catcher are coming soon as well!!
Pics will be here in the upcoming days!!
Thank You!

Here, I was just talking to my buddy richy rich and we were talking about our next set of pads. he's happy with his Mckinny and I love my battrams. But I said to him "my fury's should last me a long time, I probably won't buy anything new till at least Scott comes out with some new lineup"
2 days later you announce a new lineup.
Are you trying to put me in debt?
I'm excited to see what you've come up with. If it's anything like what you did with the Fury, it'll be great

From the talks I've had with Scott pants are out of the question. It would cost him more to make them than he could sell them for. Aside from that he doesn't have the machine(s) needed to make the pants.

10-13-2007, 08:28 PM
As for pants, the only machine I would need to get would be an industrial serger, not a big deal there, but for the amount of time needed to make a pair of pants, I would probably have to charge similar to an upperbody pad. Of course, there would be the custom options not available on the pants off the shelf! So it may be an option down the road, just not in the imediate future...
Photos of the new NEXUS pads will be available sometime Sunday the 14th!!
I have to get some good shots of these!! Catch glove photos should also be available Sunday Evening or Monday!

Basically the Lefebvre leg channel just has the calf wrap/wedge and the knee wing/block and no other flaps/pads inside. It's also strapped on the outside of the pad to allow for better rotation.
I think I got that right!

a lot of traditional pads, and even modern have a leg channel with calf wedges, and calf wraps and this and that. locks for the wraps and deep channels.
the RBK / LEfevbre design is very barren channel. there's ntohing in it but perhaps just a calf wrap and knee setup
I dont have pictures of an actual lefebvre pads, But i had Scott mimmick it with my pads... here is a empty channel. shallow leg, nothing in it but knee setup

Ok... the pics will be here soon!!
Soon you will see a sneak peak at the Nexus pads and catch glove! Blocker will be in production later this week!
Some of the new features you are going to see:
FLAT FACE
SOLID VERTICAL ROLL with BUILT IN BREAKS for the same flex as out FURY MODEL
OPEN LEG CHANNEL
THIN THIN THIN gussetts!!!
OUR LIGHTEST GOAL PAD Ever... size 37" 4.7 lb.
OPEN LEG CHANNEL with a wider shin and shallower sides
QUICK CHANGE LANDING GEAR.
MORE SQUARED BOOT than previous BATTRAM pads
SQUARED THIGH
Basically what I wanted to do was blend features of our most popular goal pad the Fury with whats hot out there right now!! I think we achieved this goal. The biggest change is the thin profile and the lower profile veritcal roll as well as the thinned out boot and open widened leg channel. These changes allowed me to perfect the interior desing of the pad to utilize some really nice foams that I have not worked with in the past simply because of the fact I didnt have a pad that could use this foam to its potential, this foam is one of the key reasons to the dramatic weight loss on a pad this large, while still providing optimum protection!
The catch glove is the evolution of what started out as a FURY model with some ideas inputed by customers, then I decided to make this into the NEXUS catch glove.
It will feature:
The use of ULTIMA on the interior
New Pocket thinner to allow the glove to have a more open look and feel to it
Full Jenpro thumb and pinky stays creating a more comfortable feel on the hand
New Backhand cover to provide more protection and also a cleaner look.
Internal glove with new strap setup
Hopefully David will have the image over to me shortly!

Nice work Scott and Chakal! The pads look really thinned out. I can’t wait to see more detailed shots. I’ve been curious about the open leg channel since switching from my old Helite III’s. I also like the sound of a more open glove. I’m really starting to get used to, and enjoy, my Fury catcher, but the opening is rather small. Well worth the wait.
Scott Battram
10-16-2007, 12:11 AM
The glove in the photo is also a 45" perimeter model, so its not going to look as large as a non nhl spec model for the guys playing rec etc where size doesnt matter...

Something else I noticed, you can see the breaks in the vertical roll. Unless it is just me. Check out the green circles in the picture below. I guess the vertical roll is solid on the outside face, but a wedge is removed at each break.

Nice Eye!!
This is one thing we are going to make look even better on the next set.. I need to move the bottom one up about 1 " so it hits at a different flex point and I have a cool idea for this as well! Not so much functional, but cosmetically speaking it will let you know there is indeed a break there!
Cerberus, dont worry!! This pad isnt designed to replace the Fury, but designed so we can have two top end pads that will cater to a larger goaltender customer base! As some guys have said here, it would be pretty hard to make the Fury any better than it already is... this is just one more choice for our customers... and of course, still built here in CANADA!!

Yeah, Canada ROCKS! :D
But I'm being bad. I'm already considering what colours I would get the new graphic in.
I'm thinking the same, but yellow where the blue is, and blue where the red is.
Also, the Nexus logo looks really cool. I like how the X matches the pad graphic.
It all looks great, nice work Scott and Chakal!

Very interesting...
[Best Muhammed Ali Voice] "Looks like an RBK, plays like a Fury!"
Call me crazy, Scott, but is that glove perhaps that new version of the Myst design you mentioned to me a while back? There's a vaguely Bionic look to it...
Oh yeah, dumb question... Would it be possible to do an entire leg channel in the Exceed material (I think that's the name) that's on some of the rear face of the Fury, or would it wear out too quickly? Also, while we're on the subject of materials, any word on the quality/durability/playability of that new Retro synth-leather?
Scott Battram
10-16-2007, 11:03 AM
Exceed is a material that is in Limbo right now... The supplier is discontinuing it until they can find a new manufacturer of the material who will do smaller amounts. Currently they have to order a minimum of 3000 yards per colour at one time.
Hopefully they will find a new supplier quickly!! If you look at sprawls pads, he has it pretty much on the entire backing other than the center channel since he has no internal leg set up!
We will be doing a set of RETRO gear up in the upcoming weeks so I will be able to showcase this material. Apparently I can still obtain the Buckey material as well. I still need to confirm this though.
Scott Battram
10-16-2007, 12:03 PM
I actually strapped these up for the first time last night... for years I wanted to create a goal pad that moves with the leg, these pads have so much flex, that if you squat while wearing them, the pad actually will contour around and move with your legs, they are also so light, that its hard to believe that you are actually wearing a goal pad on the leg. The pad itself feels like an extention of the body rather than a goal pad. Of course the above is just my opinion, and many of you who know me, know that I tell it like it is and thats just what I am doing. These things feel better than I had ever thought a pad could feel!

Hi all,
Finally got around to registering here...
I dropped into Scott's place today to pick up my new C/A (topic for another thread) and saw the new Nexus pads.
I am VERY impressed. They are extremely light and very flexible. I would equate them to my daughter's Sher-Wood C-10s in both categories. Will strongly recommend to her that she look at these pads to replace her 12" C-10s for next season.
Another awesome pad, Scott! Well done.

To answer some questions:
Some asked here and some asked where I cant answer....
First, these are not an RBK clone... (jeesh!!)
Inline Versions are always available, just ask!!
These are available now, more information and photos will follow over the course of the week...
Blocker will be produced this weekend. We also have to keep the orders moving here, as orders for this new pad have already started to come in since being made public last night.
RPringle was the first person other than me and my staff to see these pads... so he has an unbiased opinion on these pads and the awesome flex appeal and light weight!
All in all this has to be one of the best pads out there!! It is something new, unique and a Battram Original just to prove to those who like to make the claim all we do is clone! Pads were an idea on a Friday night and a reality on a Tuesday morning!
Not to mention, this has to be one of the best graphics ever used on a set of gear!
Yes, purple is available!

Scott -
Is the calf just a flap like the Fury or more of a 3D wedge?
Scott Battram
10-16-2007, 06:38 PM
Right now it is set up like the fury with the internal calf guard alongside it. I dont know if adding a wedge would be a good idea on this pad as I am thinking when you drop to the Bfly, it will want to roll you forward rather than make a nice platform along the ice for stability.

No modern day pad would be made without knee stacks, I don't think you have to worry about slamming your knees with these bad boys.
Scott Battram
10-16-2007, 10:46 PM
Currently this setup has one laced in stack, then another one piggybacked to it using Velcro, the inner cradle is quite large on the Nexus and is made with 3/4" etha and 1/4" LD-45 the outer knee wing is a combo of HD and LD foams. I was going to experiment with a solid knee block, but the problem is not all goalies like that, with the adjustable stack, it allows for a greater range of customization to the thickness of the stack. Because the straps are all adjustable from the knee up, running the straps through the stack wouldn't make sense. Also the stack ends up being the same height as the internal knee wing, so we need to have the straps clear the lifts.

I LOVE the graphic...but as I'm looking at this set more closely, I'd definately have the top of the graphic extend to the vertical roll.
In the picture below, the blue graphic goes from the boot portion of the vertical roll, but ends at the top just before it hits the vertical roll.
I'd love to see if someone could photoshop this in order to imagine how the pad would look if the graphic were extended up.
I love the name too BTW.

I've not decided yet whether or not mine will just have the stock two tones graphic in white/silver or if I'll go with the Fury graphic to match my gloves. I'm digging the NexXus graphic though!

IMO, the nicest looks with that graphic will be a Huet-esque alternating scheme of very rich colours, a white or silver base with the two thinner strips (the inside one and the outside 'Boomerang' shape) for colour, or a sort of 'Ripple Effect' of progressively lightening or darkening shades of the same basic colour with weave for emphasis (eg. white, light blue, royal blue, royal blue weave, DC blue, navy, moving inside-out or outside-in).

If the roll was round, or triangular doing this would be a piece of cake, since you hit a 90 degree wall so to speak, getting the graphic to line up perfectly each and every time can be a bit of a chore, and if its out as little as an 1/8 of an inch it will stick out like a sore thumb! If we went to an old style break for the top of the pad, then it would be easy to do... but with the current setup it will be challenging!
Ryano42s pads carried the graphic through the lower vertical roll and that was a bit easier to do because it didnt run through on as sharp an angle!
Lots of stuff might look good on 2D computer screens and paper, but how it works on a 3D shape can make for a bit of a challenge!! But thats why we are becoming known as the best graphics people in the industry!! We will take on the challenge!

OK Scott,
First off nice to hear that inline is available. I just cant give up my non ice lifestyle. Though then again the plates stay on for ice as well as there is no way I can sit still for 45 minutes or more to put them on and off for each pad.
Back on topic though. I am coming from a Deceptor pad. It is flexible but not as much as many other pads I have tried on recently at clinics. Any chance you would rent out pads to try?
Being outside of Philly, not too many people rock custom pads so my chances of someone having the pad I want to see is slim to none.
I took a chance with the deceptor and never regretted it but to move to a more flexible pad would be a jump that I would have to see I think. Also any chance we could still get the more cluttered leg channel like on the deceptor? You have no idea how many times those calf wraps have saved my legs especially in roller where I do not wear socks or pants and only have bare calves to save myself from heat....
Glove - Can you get some interier shots of this? Also will this be available in an XLP size? Some of us have glove issues and need the extra size to catch things I find....:o One thing I notice on my current XLP glove is that the back of my hand can become exposed when closing the glove and sticks have found their way in every now and then.....
Blocker - Will it be possible to get my blocker mod still where I have the pad inside the blocker at the top of the wrist?

Since we do custom, we can do the XLP.
However as of January 2008 all equipment orders will be assumed to be NHL legal sizing, so the on the web form, you will need to select TRADITIONAL size or XLP.

To answer another question from another board:
The graphics are indeed overlays... We start with a full piece of base, then add the graphics ontop. This in my opinion is the ONLY way I will do graphics, I have seen stitching on too many graphics of pads split leaving a gaping hole in the pads... Companies that do the graphics in parts claim they do it to save some weight... but in reallity it is only done to save material. I would rather add an ounce or two in Jenpro knowing that should the seam wear and come apart that there is a solid base behind.
The patterns I made are in NHL sizing, but I will also offer a traditional sizing...
I will have your tracking info later today bruno!

NHL size only works for me if you can somehow send some skill with the new pads. Otherwise I need the large size to compensate for my game.....

The catcher is really a blend of the 5002 and Verge, feels like a 5002 and closes like the 5002 with an internal glove and pocket from the Verge and a new backhand pad... overall the glove feels really nice and the molds allow for a more open glove directing everything into the pocket.
I want to finish the blocker this weekend, it will be a totally different blocker than any of our offerings now...

So what is different with this new blocker than anything you sell now?
BTW, I think the new pads look sick! Not sure I like the shape of the new glove but the concept sounds good. I just prefer gloves that are flat along the top of the cuff to the top of the tee because I often use the top of the glove to cover the ice when I sprawl and roll Hasek style. How is the protection in the break compared with the first generation 5000 series gloves?
Scott Battram
10-19-2007, 02:47 PM
The blocker will take more of a traditional shape to it, with a larger flair in the top, will feature zipped in blocker similar to our 5000 and 5001 series. Will have a smaller sidewall to not interfere with the stick etc.. New finger pads using HD 1/2" foams... A really nice feel on the hand as well with possibly some new materials making up the palm for added comfort.

Sorry Guys, I was down ill with the Flu or something this past weekend... went to bed Friday night and stayed there pretty much all weekend, muscle aches so bad I could barely walk! It got so bad I had to PM my private physician (one that accepts payment in blockers and trappers etc... haha) and ask him if he thought it could be tetnus, since I sliced my finger on a pair of scissors in my shop on Tuesday.. but he told me not to worry since tetnus usually doesnt occur from the rusty nail your mom used to warn you about, and the tetnus shot is good for 10 years... and I last had one according to my trusty little yellow card in 1999 so I was good there..
Feeling much better today, but still a little stiff and sore... Should be back to normal tomorrow.

Good news is, that I am in the shop today and am patterning it right now and will be putting it togethor later this afternoon and tonight!
If all goes well, I will have photos sometime tomorrow!
Thanks for your patience!
Also we will be getting better photos of the completed new line!
So far the line has been going over well, I had Kyle Broadhagen into the shop on Tuesday to get his NEXUS set ordered up upon seeing it in person. Kyle is the leading goalie in the Southwestern Ontario JNR B loop with the St. Mary's Lincolns, the set should prove to be an interesting colour combination done in Green, White and Navy. Kyle has been a customer now for over 5 years since his days in Stratford minor hockey.

I ran into some troubles with sewing the face to the gussett and after 3 sample pieces (face, side gussett and base) I now have it nailed down! So the finish product will be completed tomorrow...
It really makes one mad when you build the entire blocker and the face twists because I couldnt figure out how to get it to line up properly! But thats what the samples are for... should have tried a few of those first before we did the entire blocker! hahah Plus the fact I sewed the face to the gussetts first, rather than the gussett to the base.... that was the first error in my ways! haha and it just went downhill from there...
But I am happy with the end product and just need to make a small change to the sidewall as well, it needs to be a little bit longer.

Take a knife to your current gear. Then no explanation is needed. It will be abundantly clear that someone's skate cut it. Then you can politely explain how the safety of the gear is compromised and do a small breakdown of the hospital bills in comparison to new gear. Then proceed to explain that as the ice enters the skate cut and settles it will begin to turn into dihydrogen monoxide which if enough were to be inhaled could cause death.

OK,
After the game in which you lost (to get sympathy), you and the guys went for a pint at the arena bar......leaving yer gear in the lobby with the rest of the teams........after a few beers you turned down the requests to stay as you wanted to come home and profess your undying love for your wife......you enter the lobby and.......GONE.......pads have been stolen......thus rendering your blocker and trapper useless as you will need new pads thus a new blocker and catcher to match.......
have a buddy take the pads.....line up a buyer and sell your set......also, flowers to the wife for being so understanding......new set of gear......
Or lie and say you won the new gear in a contest so your selling the old gear and dinner is on you........
Law Goalie

The only thing about the Nexus gear I'm not digging is the boomarang shape that sits in the middle of the graphic, it looks out of place, doesn't flow well (IMO).
I really like how you've toned down the vertical roll on the pads, I use to think your vertical roles were total overkill in terms of size.

Another fine job by Scott!
The pictures are just awsome looking. I am now pretty much certain that I will be the first person sporting Nexus gear in the Westmount senior leagues.
One question though: are other "stock" graphics available on the Nexus? As cool as the Nexus graphic is, the custom Chakal graphic from the Verge pads is calling to me like a siren's song...
Edit to add another question: I'm a little confused about the top two straps. Are they supposed to bunch up at the knee, or is one supposed to ride higher on the thigh? Having the "old school" gear leaves me a little confused about all these nefangled strapping systems on modern pads. Glad to see the sliding toe.
Edit 2 because another question popped into my mind. I remember Scott saying that he could make the knee a little softer for people who had knee issues. Would that still be possible with a thin profiled pad like the Nexus? Silly as it may seem, I bruised my left knee while going down because the sock had bunched up and the knee in my 3500s have become a little denser over the years, which created a harder surface to land on.

From what i can see in the photos and description a lot
THINNER PAD by a significant amount.
the leg channel is different. all the strapping and leg wrap stuff is on the OUTSIDE of the leg channel (the fury is on the isnide and has calf wedges). it's also much shallower.
there's different bootstraps settup.
virtually no inside gusset.

The NEXUS graphics are extremely nicer though, at least in my opinion!
The changes are quite vast, this pad is totally different pad from the Fury, which is a hard pad to improve upon! We designed the NEXUS around what customers were asking us for, lighter, open leg channel, thinner profile, less complex strapping, extreme flex etc, with this pad we have delivered what people are asking for.

when i ordered the Battram's my cousin told me he wanted to start playing net, so i sold them to him cheap to get him started, But he needed them right away as he signed up for lessons. I went back to my starter set that i got for like 100 new.

Dang!
Last time I used Bauer gear, a cow actually had to give up its life. And it was pronounced "cooper".

Sprawl...water and washer fluid don't make a good cocktail.:p
Did coopers start with reactors? and Bauer just took over or did they have a partnership?

Believe it or not, goalies didn't used to have a choice in the appearance of their gear.
My first pair of pads were Cooper GP59s that were similar to these:
http://smallsaves1.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/mygoaliepads1.jpg
I followed those up with a pair of DR LG55s like those worn by Richard Brodeur during the Canucks cup run in 82:

My first trapper was a GM6:

And my first blocker was a matching GB6 (can't find any pictures).
My gear didn't have a color other than brown until at least 1988 (red, white & blue RD LG48s)

My first trapper looked similar. It was a first baseman's mit. I still have it. ;)

Hey Scott, is the Nexus catcher easier to close than the Verge? The Verge I bought was used for about 6 months and now 1 and a half months by me and I still can't close it completely! I love the feel of the glove though.
I'm not sure if it was custom ordered that way because it feels REALLY thick in the palm so maybe there's a pro palm? and it has a really shallow pocket with a split t that always collapses in on itself.
Do you remember that catcher by any chance?
Edit: Here's the little bastid :D (Yes I said bastid)

Definately a custom order with that T, one thing I never recommend is the split T for the above reason. There may have been added padding in the palm, but I am cant remember on that glove, the Nexus glove is a much better opening and closing glove than the verge and they are two totally different gloves.

Thanks for the answer! As I said I love the feel of the glove so maybe a Nexus glove in the future for me
I like the split t though. Is there a way you can stiffen up the split t?

I still have never understood the differences between the two.
I've read on other boards that the 5000 series gloves have small pockets (except for the XL sizing) but easier closing; I'm assuming the Nexus is based on these gloves.
I've read the Verge is similar to the Vaughn in terms of closure.
My favorite has always been the Bionic series gloves. I know you had previously done a similar glove like that Scott. I'd love to see a glove with the combination of features from the 5000, Verge and Bionic. Maybe that's an idea for a custom glove (sure would cost me a bundle though).

not really a bundle,
I was one of the first to go with the battramstein pre nexus glove.
Scott said he recently put a verge pocket on a 5002 and it was really good.
But i didn't like the strapsystem inside and after a few mails and calls, there was the glove.
a 5002 without the cheater with a verge pocket and a verge inside (strapwise and so)
i was looking for a glove with an oldschool feel and look, but modern day built and light
mixed with some vaughn 5500 first edition.
well i got more than that, i got my personal puck vortex, sucks them right up.
anything is possible with Scott, just talk to him about your wishes.

Nice tribute gloves. I too, loved A-Ha! Although "Take On Me" was the bigger hit, the soaring vocals of "The Sun Always Shines On T.V." are what made me an ardent fan.;):)

I think Punisher was refering the the Fury glove that was updated and became the Nexus. You can see my Fury glove in the post linked below. Looks almost the same as the Nexus. I'm sure Punisher posted some pics, but I can't see pictures at work (), so I can't point you in the right direction.

When will the Nexus customizer be up?
The major thing stopping me from getting a set is finding a cool color combo... I can't make up my mind and I'm tired of messing around in photoshop. I'm hoping a customizer will inspire me!

Well, I just noticed that there is a really solid blank template up on the site now. Not as easy as a customizer, but a touch better then working off the .pdf I had before.
