With the bad rap NXi is getting lately I thought I'd take this time to share something positive about the mask.

Ultimately, this is a gear thread where we can share our thoughts about the product.

During the slap shot drill at practice last night I got hit in the head 3 times. The shots were from about 20' out. 2 of them were direct shots and the other one was deflected off another puck on the ice. One hit me dead center in the cage, the other 2 were on the sides.

Needless to say.....the mask held up well. I didn't experience any ringing or pain. This thing is a tank. I was in shock more than anything. Overall the mask fits well and is very comfortable.

I really hope things start turning around for NXi cause they make a really good product. http://www.goaliestore.com/board/images/smilies/smile.gif

I'd like to say I agree with you...but...

I was playing roller hockey a few weeks ago, and got hit 3 times in the mask. Pretty hard shots, agreed...but still nothing that should have left me unable to continue playing!

The mask jammed against my face so hard it broke the skin, and I was dizzy for a good part of the rest of the night. I had another game scheduled that night, but could not do it. A nice black eye to go with it as well! Always a good thing for job interviews. Explain that!!

The mask is for sale, and I'll never wear another one again. Imagine if this had been ice hockey!!

Are you crying? Theres no crying in hockey. :D (Nice unibrow btw) :p

I got a phantom

My mask is very protective, first shot i've really felt with it was a shot a couple weeks ago where it hit square on the flat side of the puck in the middle of the cage and even then it just rattled me for a little bit.

I've even taken a shot to the side of the head, next to the NXI cutout, in warmups that while surprising the hell out of me didn't cause any problems.

I think the only other thing i've felt was on that went off the very bottom of the chin and that was only because it shifted the mask.

LBR what kind of NXI is that? Both of mine didn't look anything like that.

It's the Stealth. I think it was produced after the first generation Phantom.
But don't quote me on that.

HROARK2112.....All I can say is DANG...that looks painful. Sorry to hear about that. So what mask are you getting next?

I just sold a few things on Ebay, thinking about a Quantum! Then a Protechsport.

I think that's my plan :)

Hey hroark, was that with chin sling or chin cup? Yikes, that must have been a hard shot.

Oh, not for nothing but Protechsport is the way to go. Unfortunately it looks like the wait times are at 16 weeks+, but as I have said before it's the single best made piece of equipment I have ever used and well worth the wait.

looks pretty painfull,

i can tell you what would have happend if it were ice hockey.
You would have lost a tooth, that's what happend to me when i got hit in the side of my mask (VV3) it snapped my tooth in half horizontally.

I got a Stace now because well yeah, it's rec hockey and it's belgium.
Pop one to the head galore country that is.

The Spacetech Mach 10 i got, and i must say i get pegged in the head every training, hard shots to the head once every 2 trainings is a minimum :)

i even trained with it with the semi pro team my brother plays in, an entire summer and the occasonal one timer to the head, No problem there, got the smallest dent in my cage but that's about it.

Pun.

i'm going to have to ask you to cool it. We are fully open to all forms of reviews of manufacturers, both good and bad. When a members posts a good review of a company it is their perogative. However you have spouted nothing but inflammatory comments in regards to NXI masks without so much as a story to back it up.

Please feel free to post your own reviews if you wish, But unsubstantiated comments that attack any manufacturer are undesired and unwelcome.

I recently bought a Phantom on Ebay, it was new but few years old.

Bought it based on good feedback from forums, it was listed in their store at 700 but got on eBay for 280.

My question is, what is the shell composed of ?

To me it looks like almost 1/4 inch thick plastic ?

I can flex it a bit from both sides, is this normal ?

What does a mask like Hackva or Sportmask that is made of layered fiberglass or other materials feel like ? really stiff ?

Thanks

I have a custom Sportmask and it takes a good amount of pressure to get it to move at the sides.

My Hackva's shell is pretty stiff as well - I've taken shots at point blank range and it hasn't moved at all.

Chin cup.

Still waiting for my Quantum, Tony Jarrett has it for paint right now. I need someone to help me with a face mold, and then I'm ordering a Protechsport. I'm a bit torn between the full kevlar & the kevlar/fiberglass mix.

Go for the full Kevlar (based on my experience only with that model). You are a mask guy, might as well get the best that Michel makes (the Pro finish is nice to look at, but IMO unnecessary).

1) Birthday Present to yourself.
2) You "need" the extra level of protection.
3) It can be the anniversary present to you from the wife/girlfriend.
4) Don't tell anyone who will judge you.

^^^Some of the few ways we all rationalize these purchases!!!:D

I think some masks have the sides going back even further so that there is no chance of having any exposed parts.

Which manufacturer does this ?

thank you

I'm putting my new NXi Phantom mask (with the custom Molson Canadian paint job up for sale), it doesn't fit me properly (depth).

It will be on eBay this Sunday and last about a week.

Let me know if you have any questions.

thanks

Amongst all the masks that I own, I have 2 Phantoms which I really like. The new Phantom by Quantum mask is pretty awesome.

There's more than one. Most manufacturers could trim the mask t your specs if you asked them.

I recently bought a Phantom on Ebay, it was new but few years old.

Bought it based on good feedback from forums, it was listed in their store at 700 but got on eBay for 280.

Listed at $700? Maybe with a custom paint job, but stock Phantoms were going for ~$300 from the NXi website a couple years ago, IIRC. When I got mine back then I opted to get it off eBay from an auction Steve Badger was running... $275 for a new Phantom and two cages. I still think that's an insane deal, considering that spare cages were going for $75 or so. I essentially got the Phantom for the price of a Widowmaker.:)

It's still holding up strong with just a few paint scratches here and there. Like others have said, no pain or ringing from any of the shots I've taken to the head. Took three to the head the other day, two to the cage, and I was able to track the rebound and cover up, albeit it a bit shocked. (It was a fun morning.)

Aside from the mask, I'm also still wearing that t-shirt I got with the mask, too. I still wear that thing religiously to and from every game, even after all the NXi drama that went on last year. Can't mess with my routine, right? :p

No, NXi was owned by Steve Badger, and is no longer in operation.

Phantom & Nemesis masks are now owned and produced by Quantum and Tony Jarrett.

Weird.... I thought it was owned by MArc caused I played with him this past weekend in a hockey charity tournament. We got to go in the Team NXi locker room... which Marc owned because he owns the NXi team.

I had two NXI masks. Both of which I was pleased with, but I had some customer service issues. It turns out that I was attempting to order some items during the buy out, so it took a little longer than it should have. It took some work, and many emails, but Steve and I eventually got things ironed out. I was pretty well soured on them by that point and sold both the masks I had. During that time I was overaging 4-5 shots to the head a game, and these maskd held up well enough.

As an update to my NXi Phantom...

I took a very solid slapper to the face 10 days ago. Right between the eyes, dented two bars on the birdcage I had on (my league doesn't let me wear my cateye). The mask kicked back and hit my lip, but nothing serious, no cuts or bruising.

My mask/head absorbed all the energy of the shot; the puck didn't deflect anywhere, just dropped straight down right in front of me. My defenceman froze the puck against my pad and we got the whistle. I was in shock for a second or two, but aside from a very slight headache for a couple hours after the game I didn't have any pain. This was probably the hardest impact I took to the head -- the first time I had any symptoms afterwards -- and even then the symptoms were very minimal.

I've had the mask for over three years now. There's a fair amount of scratches on the shell (some from pucks, most from me not using a mask bag), and the chrome cages are showing tiny signs of rust at some joints (I hang my gear to dry within an hour after every game, 99% of the time). The chin cup is almost disintegrated (it's been covered with a UA chin cup pad (http://www.sportsunlimitedinc.com/uachinpad.html) for a while now because nowadays the cup gets a gross, slimy texture when it gets wet). But otherwise, it's been a pretty decent buy and I had no major qualms about it.

I'll play for a few more months with the dented cage, then after the holiday season bills are paid I'll buy a new mask later this season. Probably a Hackva. Still, I'd have no problems recommending the Phantom to anyone. You know, if they were still making them.

To anyone in a similar situation as me (dented cage), 21_Degrees (http://www.21degreesllc.com) sells replacement cages for the Phantom. But the gear whore in me just wants to try out a different mask. :D

I feel the same as you do Densetsu, I'm hoping to get into a Heckle in net one of these years against you and we can compare the NXI's lol. I think I've had mine for probably 3 years, ordered it custom straight through Steve, was easy to work with and did a great job too bad about his problems but can't always work out. I still really enjoy my mask have no thoughts about buying a new one, my only complaint after all this time if the velcro tabs on the inside of the helmet a few have come lose and I need to re-glue them. I wouldn't mind looking at a new cage for mine as well thanks for posting that link up. stuck a picture of mine below from when I first got it.
