sprawl,
hate to say it dude, but that was an uncalled for comment,
buddy is looking at getting pads, custom, graphics can be more or less, i am saying what i paid, when people ask you, do you say "no comment"?
scott will let him know how much they will be for his design, even before i bought mine, i am very adiment(sp) of how much i am paying, how long it will be, and what i am getting...
i didnt know battram gear was such a "Private price system", when people ask me in my league how much i paid for my gear, should i not tell them either? i am very happy with the price, and will tell anybody who wants to know, if you have a problem with that dude, sorry.

Regarding the "private price system", if you long-time customers are getting special discounts, I am cool with that, good for you. I am a new Battram customer so I would expect to pay full price (hopefully not tho :D). If I am getting what I asked for and in excellent quality (and most importantly looks fantastic) I have no issues with paying a fair price, and Battram gear is priced very well to begin with.

We dont have any repeat customer discount program so to speak, never had the need to do that. People come back to us because they love their gear... of course someone like Ryano who is on his 6th full set or something like that may get "free embroidery!" from us. Otherwise, we treat everyone the same, or at least try to!

The pads are Nexus, with the segmented vertical roll! This design worked out really well... when I originally designed the Nexus pad from the ground up, I thought of having a full flat flaced pad, however in later models, I decided I liked having the look of the knee plate, as well as it made the pad look more traditional it also gives the goalie increase protection and defined flex points...

Well, I have finally gotten to use my babies, so I figured I would give “MY” review,
Remember, this is “MY”, as in “RYANS” opinion, and in no way means you will feel the same way as I do about this product…
Now I have that out of the way, I will continue on about my new “Nexus” combo.
I will start off with the whole process,
Customer service, I will give a 10/10.
Scott and Tischa were amazing through out the whole process. I feel they did the best they could through the communication process we had, living in Edmonton and practically everything done by e-mail, I feel it went very smooth and efficient. Some of the hiccups were expected. But all in all, they did a great job and now have a customer for life if nothing else changes with the company.
Now onto the equipment,
For the pads, I will break them down into looks, feel, and play..
Looks : 8/10,I love the looks of the pads, I really do, the only reason I am knocked them down 2 points mainly because when I took them out of the box I was blown away with how well they looked, that was UNTIL I looked up close, and notice, on the pointed edge of the graphics, they were bent forward, with more material then I felt that should have been left unstitched, so I went to a local shoe store and grabbed some cement leather glue and fixed the problem., but other then that., I absolutely love the look of the pads. I feel the v3 look is aggressive and Scott really brought the design to life.
Feel 10/10: as soon as I put the pads on, I knew I was in love with them, coming from RBK p2s, I find them to cradle the knee a lot better, and I love the channels on them. I have an odd style goalie stance, but the pads just feel right. I am really happy with the 2 knee breaks as well. Scott did a great job and putting together the pad I wanted. My personal mods to the nexus pad were the 2 knee bends, and I added the double boot strap.
Play 10/10: the pad slides like no other I have used before. The rebounds went were I wanted them, and I never felt a shot. I would say, after playing with these pads, I will most likely never go back to anything. I can’t really comment more then the pad felt proper, and moved like I would want the pad to move. I made the cleanest butterflies I have ever made with these pads; they are a beast down low.
Overall for the pad 28/30
Catcher 9/10
I will make this one short and sweet,
It gets a 9/10, I love the design it’s EXACTLY what I wanted, out of the box, it was super stiff, but as I have been breaking it in, it is getting a lot better, but I still find the puck will slip out of the top. But I will be working on that, other then that, the feel is great, my hand fits perfect, and its nice and light, I feel faster in this glove.
Blocker 5/10
This here is the heart breaker of the set. First off, out of box, one of the leather straps was not sewn to the thumb, it was just dangling there, so I had to go to my equipment fix guy and get that sewn on, and second, the pad between the thumb and the index finger will not allow me to hold on to my stick properly, as I play with a very active stick, this eliminated that part from my game, which in my case, really hindered me. I am in the process of getting this fixed, so hopefully after everything is how I like it, I will be happy with it, but as It stands now. I am not HAPPY AT ALL with the blocker, and went back to my RBK in the middle of my second game. But like I said, after I have it all modded, I will let you guys know how it feels, but even then. It will not get a higher mark as it is now not the original design.
I will post again in a few months to let you all know how my pro rated battram’s are holding up in my div one men’s league.
All in all, I love the pad and catcher, I love the graphics and Scott was a REAL pleasure to work with. Once I get my blocker problem solved, I will be a happy camper, till then
Keep the pucks outa the net boys and girls.

well ladies and gentlemen,
here is the "Rockstar" nexus blocker :D
as you can see in this picture, you can tell exactly where i chopped out the old material and had the padding inside cut down then resewn and glued
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg306/oilmachine/hockey005.jpg
this picture shows that i will still recieve the protection needed if i ever drop the stick and need to play with out, as the thumb pad almost covers the cut out part, thus protecting my hand.
http://i251.photobucket.com/albums/gg306/oilmachine/hockey007.jpg
all in all, i really feel comfortable with this mod, and can use my stick freely as evident playing last night, i was able to knock pucks away around the net, and move my hand up and down the shaft to the paddle with ease...
hope this helps....
cheers,
ryan

But with continued use, i found i was able to use it with lots of ease. I was able to slide my hand up and down the shaft without interference and now it feels great

The pad not only looks better with the "knee plate" included, the full segmented vertical roll must add to the pad's flexiblity (which anyone looking into this pad will probably want more of).
I'd love to see these new features in a pad with the new Nexus graphic.

On the solid vertical roll of the pad, we have created flex points as well, but the segmented out side roll will have the ability to offer a little more flex, more so when new I believe, once the other solid roll breaks in I think both set ups will be comparable.

Me too. I'm under the impression that it keeps it's shape better. I like to have a big S-shape to my pads, and I'm under the impression that once it's done, the pad keeps it's shape better with a solid roll. PLus I like the look of it! LOL

Evening All. After checking out Battram's reviews online and product testing a pair of Verge pads with matching glove and blocker, I was ready to put my order in for a NeXus combo to the Battrams.
And I have to say, all the Battram fanatics on here made me almost skeptical. You guys are wildly enthusiastic. I thought maybe Scott putting something in the product.
But I just got the design specs from Chakal. And I'm having a hard time concentrating on my homework. I submitted my ideas to Scott, who gave them to Chakal, who really created an incredible design spec. (I've always admired artistic people, being very far from one myself, I can only stand afar and gape.)
I'll send pics of the gear once Scott manufactures everything. I'm really excited about the light weight of the pads, the thin design, and the features on the Nexus glove and blocker.
Anyway, I'm going back to what I'm supposed to be doing. I just wanted to publicly thank Chakal for the great graphic work, and Scott for his patient customer service and the combo, which I know will be awesome.

I'm having the same trouble with the Nexus Blocker. I don't have a fix-it guy so I'm hoping with alot of use it'll break-in to my liking. There is just way too much padding. I'm pretty handy, and if it comes down too it I'll cut and stitch it myself.
For the catch glove the only thing I don't like is a pad on the inside front cuff, but I'll get used to it in time.
The leg pads, as with the gloves also, are so light. It feels like all I'm wearing is my pants and chest protector. It will take alot of playing to get used to the feel of these pads. I'm going from 7yr old Cyclone pads with Millenium gloves to the new Nexus equipment. It is quite a change, but I feel faster in the new equipment.

I personally asked for extra hash in my set... :D
I also have an issue with the blocker when holding the stick... seems to be a re-occuring theme for everyone. I noticed that in order for me to hold on the the stick properly, my actual blocker needs to be angled slightly since there is so much padding and there is no actual room for the stick to pass through naturally. Sliding the stick forward for a pokecheck does not seem to be a problem tho thankfully... its more of an uncomfort issue with my blocker.
Only issue I have with Catcher is aside from the stiffness (which is almost all nicely broken in now) when it is fully closed, the pocket doesnt completely seal. There is about a 1.5 inch gap where a pick can creep/bounce/slide out if i'm not careful. On the bright side it does completely seal on the ice when covering up the puck tho. I think for my trapper the thumb needs to be angled forward a few degrees more in order to completely seal. I have taped the catcher shut for a few days to see if it helps... Scott do you have any remedies for this? I dont want pucks to be sliding out when I do my round-the-worlds and then look like a jackass! :D

I've used my Nexus equipment for two weeks (6 games) and the pads are great.
The blocker is getting better. I will not have to cut any padding out. The only thing I don't like is the extra thick padded palm of the glove. I dont get the same feel as in my old blocker's palm. I can't really feel the stick as well or grip it as easy. If the palm is still a problem after I play through a whole session then I may talk to Scott about getting an "old school" palm put in the glove.
The catcher is not bad. It still needs some break-in time though.
I really like the 11" pads better than 12" Cyclones. I can skate better and faster. I think my game has improved using the thinner pads.

Thanks for the update...If I was to do custom pads/gloves would I be able to meet with you to get proper leg measurements etc.... I have some wicked ideas for graphics relative to my work with the Department of Homeland Security. I am a newbie relative to playing goal on ICE but have become absolutley hooked ( much to my bank account's detriment !) and definately need a bigger set of pads ( I am currently in RBK 6k 32") .... I will admit that my graphic displayed here on this site looks similar to Scott's Nexus graphic, but that is because both look similar to RBK. As RBK is the King of the Castle, everyone below them tends to want to be them in some capacity. So did anyone copy anyone. NO, we both made adaptations of the most popular pad on the market, and use it for our own pads. Knowing what Scott's graphic was, I made every effort to make mine different, while displaying some of the features in the RBK graphic.
It was funny when Scott launched his Nexus, I saw it first, before anyone else because I was at his shop the day after he finsihed them, and it was even funnier when Chakal did the promo......because the song he chose and the word that flashed letter by letter across the screen was "EVOLUTION". That was a pad I have been making for a year....HAHAHA.
Anyways, Scott and I are friends and have been since 1992. We even occasional have to help each other when suppliers screw up on shipments or are out of stock. We live minutes apart, played junior Hockey together, so we have a respectful relationship.
Scott even married a girl from my home town, 40 minutes from where we now live, and I went to public school with her. That was just a coincidence, but funny none the less. I remember Tischa and I sat beside each other in Mrs. Clark's grade 5 class. She always got 10 out of 10 on spelling quizes. I never copied, so I only got 9 out of 10.....HAHAHA

James, no offense was meant by my original comment. I am clearly still learning how the industry works and the various interpersonal relationships of the producers.
I was just noting the similarity, more for humour sake than for anything else - I am still learning that I am not always funny.
I played with a friend yesterday who's got a set of your pads - they're red, with a Canadian maple leaf in white. Thin design, somewhat similar, I'm sure to the Nexus pads that I ordered from Scott. He plays well in them.
Anyways, I'm glad that you and Scott get along well with each other, and that you are able to help each other in times of need.

Nicely handled, James.
You, Scott and Pete Smith are in a class of your own.

I never even though that James graphic looked anything like the Nexus one... other than the bomerang, that was the only thing I saw similar... no big deal, stuff like that doesnt bother me... There are already way too many egos in this business, I never, nor do I want to be looked upon as one of those folks!
Its also nice to see James here on the BB. But just so he knows, I will be waiting for my cheque, just make it payable to SPRAWL and he will make sure its handled correctly!!

[quote=Sprawl;3348]kinda tackless guys tellin people what you're paying
This has gotta be the seccond or third time I've come across someone on this board getting hand slapped for mentioning dollar amounts. This isn't some type of cult is it?
It's only natural when giving info on a product that the price would be included and expected.
If there truly is different prices for repeat buyers that's great. We all like to be rewarded for our loyalty.

well my argument in it is that every pad is different with Scott, Everyone has customizations that are different and lots of people go with different graphic choices. All these factors combined can end up with a varying degree of difference in final price.
Scott has a "MSRP" or base price for the pads, and those are on the website and easily obtainable. that should be your baseline and should you want any modifications done, you shuold contact and get a quote. Asking what others pay could potentially set up a sticky situation as it produces "why is my price different than yours" scenario.
I'm just one of those people that believe if you can negotiate yourself a better deal for yourself, it shouldn't be blabbed everywhere as it creates sticky situations and future problems for both sellers and buyers.
Just my opinion. I think think it's tacky.

My neighbour has a great line when people ask him what he paid for some of the nice things he owns and that line is "Why, do you want to pay for it?"
I think its a generational thing, I wouldnt dream of asking him what he paid for the 2 new Harley Davidson motorcyles he just bought, simply because I dont ride motorbikes, and I wont be buying any in the future, plus its really none of my business!
I have no problem with people asking the cost of goal equipment, however, all the prices are right on our website, and the only thing that will change the price is Tax, Custom Graphics/Mods/Embroidery, Shipping. So the prices the people pay will be right in line with the website pricing, if there are mods done the cost for what you pay for those are not outrageous and I cant think of many times where they have exceeded a couple hundred bucks, so its really no big secret, and if you get to your 3rd or 4th full combo from us, I am sure we have thrown in free embroidery to some of those customers or given them a break on a graphic as a thank you for their loyalty. But with the equipment market the way it is, we wont be lowering the cost of the pads! So there really are no special deals from us at least!

I just ordered a set of all-white Nexus gloves, because 9not necessarily in this order)
a) I need them, and Scott makes great stuff.
b) Scott's turnaround times blow everyone else out of the water.
c) I had been a dick to Scott and had felt bad about it for quite a while.

Scott,
On the Nexus, is the base color a complete sheet? I ask this because I've been looking at my pads and I would really prefer the graphic if the "Boomerang" were absent. If you don't recall, my set was the one with the detroit color scheme.
Other than that, these things are tanks. Holding up great under a trememdous ammount of wear I've been putting on them. Never been happier in a set of pads.

Under the boomerang, it is a solid piece... so if you take it off, all you will see are the stitch holes...

True, probably won't just curious to what my options were. Always get the itch to do SOMETHING with the equipment during the offseason.

I got to use the my new Nexus combo set yesterday. It didn't feel perfect, but better than I excepted
Glove
The glove was the piece where I was expecting the most problems. Believe it or not I had none what so ever, it actually felt better than my previous glove which was a Nexus as well. I don't know why but the new one felt better than the one that I've been using for a year.
Blocker
I had a little trouble with the finger and thumb protection getting in the way when holding my stick. I guess its a matter of getting used to. If after a couple of more ice sessions I can't get used to it, I might get some of the finger protection trimmed down.
Pads
I had some trouble with the pads, but not as much as I expected to have. The first issue was that the outside piece of the knee cradle would rub against my knee and was alittle annoying. I'll get that piece trimmed down so that all that it will be there for is for the velcro tab (so the strap can be attached)
Second, I'm sure is just a matter of strap adjustments. I didn't always get a full proper rotation. The tops straps were loose with the exception of the new thighguard strap (it was just alittle more snug). The boot and calf straps were tighter.
I love the look of the pads, but i find that there is alittle emptyness on the outer part of it (inside the circular design). Is there any way to put on the Battram logo or additional graphics, or is it too late?
Overall I am satisfied with the set, as I said I am extremly difficult when it comes to any new gear, and was surprised of the way they felt after their first use.
Thanks again Scott for the great job!!!!

McLazy, can you post a pic of the finger protection you have? When Scott updated the design this seemed to have solved the issue. Looking at mine, I don't see how it could.

Wow that was a fast reply. I replyed to your post about strapping the pads.
Also, not entirely understanding your thoughts on the knee cradle. Maybe a pic of that as well. Do you wear hockey socks when you play?

I just got back back from a skate sharpening at the hockey superstore, Hockey Life.
While I was waiting I tried on some of the new gloves, Reebok, Vaughn and Itech. I'm glad I did, it just fully reassures me that I made the right choice going with Battram's Nexus pads and gloves.
Thanks again Scott.

You can say that again - Battrams are the best.
Seriously, you guys who haven't tried them on or used them have no idea what you are truly missing. My new equipment fits like a glove (literally), and I was able to wear it in a Game my first night out (not the smartest thing I'd ever done). I couldn't be happier . . .
Lookin' forward to the mask Ron. Where are you posting the Pics?
