My 2 Cents Worth………….
Ordered complete Nexus set - “The Punisher”.
Ordering & design process was smooth as glass Scott and Tischa aim to please; Chakal took our son’s ideas and made them work on the gear.
Gear arrived after about two weeks on the road; customs took a longer look than usual. Didn’t help that there was a huge weed and mushroom bust locally with connections passing through Canada.
Observations and opinions:
Blocker – fit and finish is flawless. Feel of the glove is similar to the Verge blocker it’s replacing, as are the finger protectors. Padded palm is a plus to help lessen any sting that may come from any stick contact (slashing). Board itself is reminiscent of the 5000 series as it has more mass then the Verge – huge plus – son could not feel shots he deflected as he did with the lighter weight Verge. This blocker has enough adjustment to make it an extension of the body, not an add-on.
Trapper – fit and finish is flawless. Feel of the inner glove is similar to the Verge trapper it’s replacing. Trapper has ample padding on both the rear and cuff areas to protect from the most aggressive slashes and jabs. The palm is hinged and very well padded with a deep web, a little stiff out of the box, but 45 minutes of ice and this bad boy is working. Trapper seals perfectly around it’s entire circumference every time it’s placed on the ice leaving no openings for a puck to squirt through if the Ref’s are a little slow on the whistle and the pokes keep coming. This trapper has enough adjustments to make it an extension of the body, not an add-on.
Pads – these pads are flat out beautiful, the pictures Scott took don’t do them justice, fit and finish is flawless. After the obligatory 20 minutes of fiddling with the straps, clips and Velcro to get them just right our son hit the ice. Butterfly was dead on without the need to remove any of the knee stacks. Pads are ultra-thin, super-flexible, and extremely light in weight and rotate beautifully. The light weight was an unfounded concern; whatever this new foam Scott is using it is a perfect deadening agent, hard shots from the point and slot would just die after hitting the pads leaving literally no rebounds and no pain in the shins or thighs. There was virtually no break in time required.

Observations and opinions - updated:
Blocker – it’s a blocker, not much additional information, except for its sound; this blocker has a resounding thud when pucks hit it. Pucks do not fly off of it they just flutter away in the direction they’re directed, not much in the rebound arena.
Trapper – This trapper, as is all the gear NHL legal, so there is no cheater between the cuff and thumb. This glove opens and closes as natural as a hand, the deep web swallows any puck near it. The cuff board has the same thud as the blocker and appears to be shaped in a way that directs pucks into the web as apposed to the dreaded skip over.
A suggestion for the trapper:
Change the name from Nexus to Venus as in fly-trap, any pucks that get near this thing just disappear!!
Pads – Single boot strap with the sliding toe force these pads to rotate perfectly, even if the straps are over done. Our son mis-adjusted one strap in a rush to hit the ice during warm-ups, the pad rotated flawlessly although he knew immediately a strap was “off”. Break in time was non-existent for the gear except for a few minutes for the trapper.

Thank you. Yes, both gloves are NHL legal, the graphics create an optical illusion, along with the distraction factor.

Only one now because I'm selling my stuff as soon as I get a new one. I don't have enough place for more now in my new apartment.
My Nexus set is going to be SportGold jenpro/Red jenpro/royal jenpro. Same colours as I have now, but with the Nexus graphic. That will look awesome with our team's uniforms.

I'm really amazed by the Nexus line. I was looking at replacing my Smith 1000s with the Smith 5000 line up but I may have to rethink that after seeing these.
How difficult would it be to get used to the Nexus pads after using something like the 1000s? It seems that the Fury model is closer to what I'm used to but I would love to try something new. I play A + B league - hybrid style but using more butterfly these days. Also any thoughts on benefits of 11" vs. 12" with a pad like this?

My son found no difference in the "feel" during his jump between his Fury vs. Nexus . We've never even seen a pair of Smith's so I can't comment on them, but when my son moved from his Barrage set (similar to Vaughn Legacy) to his Fury set, the transition took one practice.

Alot of the Nexus desing is built around the Fury pad, so that is one of the reasons he wouldnt have noticed a big change!

Any reason why some visibly have stitching across the top and bottom of the knee? Its visible on Chakals and the orange/blue beastish... however not on any other.
Gregan
01-22-2008, 10:03 PM
Scott designed to be completely flat faced, then found that the stiching made the pad look better, so he started putting the stiches across the face of the pad. It's not a functional piece of the pad, purely there for looks.
If you don't want the stiching on your pads, Scott will do it without.
Scott Battram
01-22-2008, 10:07 PM
Actually, what we did was really more than just put stitching across the front of the pad, anyone could do that... we added a 1/2" HD knee plate to the pad, to increase the flex of the pad even more as the plate acts as a fulcrum and allows the pad to flex on a fixed axis at two points on the face of the pad.

it doesn't matter how well you do it, as long as you look damn good doing it
ScJeff

Looks dont stop pucks comming from Mr. Custom Graphic himself?:p.
So if we wanted a stiffer version of the nexus pad just ask for it without the new stitching type thing?
Scott Battram
01-23-2008, 10:25 AM
Actually, adding the knee plate stiffened the pad up than without it.
ScJeff
01-23-2008, 06:42 PM
So it increases the flex well stiffening it up? O.o. Im confused!
Scott Battram
01-23-2008, 06:50 PM
The vertical flex through the knee is improved, but the lateral flex through the knee was stiffened up with the knee plate so the pad wont have as much lateral flex in the knee.

The vertical flex through the knee is improved, but the lateral flex through the knee was stiffened up with the knee plate so the pad wont have as much lateral flex in the knee.
I myself am always confused with this whole "Vertical" and "Lateral" thing...since I usually think in terms of "Horizontal" and "vertical", not lateral.
So let's start from the beginning...
"Vertical" flex is the flex of the pad as it's being pushed down; kinda like if you are flexing your leg from a standing position to a squat? So more like "top to bottom" flex?
"Lateral" flex is the flex of the pad as if you were to twist it from left to right (assuming the bottom of the pad is anchored to the floor)?
So having said all this...what I'm understanding is...with the knee plate, the Nexxus flexes downward better, but does not bend side to side as well? Wouldn't you want a stiffer lateral flex up to, but more later flex on the bottom of the pad (along the shin and boot) so that it moves with the leg better?
Scott Battram
01-25-2008, 07:10 PM
That is correct, and thats why we stiffened up the knee up with the knee plate. To make the pad have less lateral flex from the knee up. The best people to actually talk to about this are the guys using the Nexus pads out there, Chakal probably could explain this as he is using the Nexus.

What's the difference in 11" NHL size and 11" traditional size on Nexus pad?
The 11" traditional is 11" wide and that's all, it's IIHF legal. The 11" NHL meets all the requirements asked by the NHL since 2009. New requirements can be seen here:
