View Full Version : Does the Nexus trapper compare to any current gloves on the market?

Title says it all. I like the look of the Nexus, but I was wondering if it compares to any trappers on the market right now. All I know is that I can tolerate the CCM Gatekeeper, but the only gloves that feel right to me are TPS gloves (Summit, Xceed, Bionic, Response to a lesser extent than the rest).
Just wondering, thanks.

I'm going to be a smart ass and say if you can tolerate the CCM Gatekeeper then you'll be able to tolerate just about any glove on the market. That glove is a POS!!! It's on par with the crappy old bauer gloves.
The Nexus, from what I understand is a mix of Scott's gloves from the past with a few tweaks. I don't know any more then that.

I disagree. The gatekeeper does suck, but it's no where near as bad as any of the Itech models, any of the Nike/Bauer models, CCM's other models, etc. I've tried various Eagle models and they all felt weird, I do not like any of the Vaughn models (Epic felt the worst), though I haven't tried the new Velocity 3 yet.
Basically, I like the way the TPS gloves feel to me and I was wondering how close the Nexus is to them.

It is quite shocking how crappy most gloves feel off the shelf isn't it? I would agree with you... though I haven't tried on any of the latest itech gloves.
Based on the pics, it appears that the Nexus has a better off the shelf shape then most gloves on the market. Hopefully Scott or someone who owns a Nexus glove will chime in for you soon...

Yeah man. I had been using a Miller CM9 until September 06 (5 years). Such a great glove. Great for catching the puck and shooting. When they said the new gloves are like 2nd blockers, they weren't kidding. I'd have loved to get another Miller CM9, but they've closed. I'm just having such a hard time finding another glove that feels right. I can catch fine with the Gatekeeper, but it's more like throwing the glove in front of the puck and hoping it hits the pocket as opposed to putting it in the right position. And the sad part is that I like it better than 95% of what's out there.

Hey guys,
I was just looking to see if anyone had anything to add to this thread. The Nexus gloves have been out for a while now and I was wondering if any owners out there could add their input. Like I mentioned earlier, the only two gloves on the market I currently like are the TPS lines (Summit, to a lesser extent R8) and the Vaughn 5500.
Thanks guys.

Below is a quick comparison between my Battram Fury and TPS Summit gloves. As I understand it, the Fury glove is the predecessor to the Nexus, kind of a prototype. Hopefully this should help you a little in your decision. I should also note that this is not an equal comparison. The Summit is old sizing, while the Fury is NHL spec. A better comparison would be between to like sized gloves. Now onto the pictures.
400
Thumb Angle
As you can see the Summit’s thumb angle is more towards the palm than the Fury. Below I’ve added some lines to help illustrate.
401
Glove Break
The break for both gloves is pretty close but not exact. The Fury’s break starts at just below the first pinky knuckle and ends at the first pointer finger knuckle. Pretty much along the top of the palm. I’d say it almost follows the natural crease in your hand if you hold you finger straights (don’t’ curl) and try to close your hand.
The Summit’s break is a little higher than the Fury. The break begins at the first pinky knuckle and ends at the second pointer finger knuckle. I’d say the break is more along the line where your fingers meet your palm. See the illustration below.

Ok, so it is not a quick comparison. In this post I’ll talk about how the gloves feel (very subjective). I like both gloves, but I definitely have a soft spot in my heart for the Summit. The glove just feels right.
Fury
The glove is snug on my hand (medium to large hand). I like the neoprene fingerstalls. It really helps with stopping the glove from rotating when your hand gets wet. The glove is more padded than the Summit. On both sides of the break are padded rolls. When you close the glove the rolls spread apart. Great for protection. The glove is a little harder to close compared to the Summit. I’ve had a lot of problems with pop outs with the Fury, but I’m sure some of that is from the smaller size.
Summit
The glove is not as snug compared to the Fury. It does move around when my hand gets wet. I’d say the glove feels less padded compared to the Fury. Inside, the palm feels smooth with no noticeable rolls. I’ve gotten a few stingers with both gloves, but more with the Summit. Most of the stingers with the Summit are along the inside thumb, pointer finger, and break. The Summit is also easier to close and after a few games it was completely broken in. Catching is no problem with the Summit (no pop outs). Of course the thing is huge with a deep pocket, so that is really going to help.
I hope this has been of some help.

Hi bud,
Thanks for the pics, I really appreciate your time and effort.

You're welcome. It was actually quite fun even though it is so hard to accurately discuss something so subjective.
I was thinking more about it at work today and I've been trying on both gloves this evening. I'm going to have to make some amendments to my post above. I'm starting to think that the breaks are almost in the same location and that location would be around where I described the Fury break. I still think the Summit is a little higher or the angle is slightly different, where the break ends a little higher at your pointer finger. One of the hardest parts of figuring this out is the amount of padding in the palms. The Fury has much more padding than the Summit. The Summit's break is more like a hinge than the Fury. There is more padding around the Fury's break so I feel like I'm trying to close the glove in a different way.
Ok I think I'm obsessing now.

Rotate fulford's hand pick clockwise a bit and you have the Nexus break.
EDIT:// My suggestion would be to sit down and really think about how your current glove feels. Where the break is located in relation to your palm, and which direction exactly your fingers fold over when you close the glove. Once you have all the mechanics down on paper, call up Scott and talk to him about the gloves. Maybe tweaking the Nexus might not be your best bet. Maybe he carries another glove that would suit better.

Too late, I bought a Summit (should be here in a few weeks). Anyway, thanks for the advice. I am, however, waiting on a new blocker and pads from Battram.

I personally had a little trouble to get used to my nexus glove, first 3-4 times were hell, but after a few little adjustments ( mainly cutting off most of the material that covers the fingers on the inside of the glove. This caused my fingers to be tight, and eventually would lose circulation in them) Now there is no problem at all, and I love the glove. It isn't comparable to any other glove that I tried.

BKLYNN,
The Nexus glove(s) are a fanatastic choice.
After over a year of searching for a set of gloves that felt comfortable, I began to become disheartened. I started believing that they had changed styles so much from the time that I purchased my (still in use) Vaughn 3700 gear, 16 years ago, that I would never find a comfortable set again, and I literally tried on every major manufacture's gloves and some minor ones too. I had almost settled on the TPS Summit, and was okay with the Vaughn 5500 as a second choice, but I decided to take a closer look at Scott's gear. Through great communication with him and getting an idea of how his gloves fit I ordered new gear! WOW what a surprise when I tried on my new trapper!! It feels better than anything I have used in my 36 year career of netminding and was certainly better than any of the new gloves I tried on. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not trying to bash any other manufacturer of equipment, I'm simply stating that for my personal style and fit, including the angle of the trapper's break, Scott's NEXUS was a fantastic find, fit and feel for me.
At any rate, hope the Summit works out for you. I'm sure that the Nexus would have as it appears as though our preferences in trappers were very similar.

Hey nik,
Sorry, I never noticed your post. This year, I'm playing various beer leagues. Unfortunately, I lack this thing called skill, so when I graduated, I didn't get any pro offers :(.

I need new gloves soon.
Blocker wise I am not too fussy, but catcher wise I like the Vaughan stuff.
Had a couple of Vaughan catchers and tried the V3 at Goalie Camp and liked them all, simple couldn't get on with the RBK II glove though!
What's the closest Battram has to Vaughan 'style' gloves?

I'm coming from RBK P2's (now) and Old School Brian's Thief's (before) - anyone make that transition from those kinds of gloves to the Nexus? Thoughts/ideas? I'm gonna order my set in a day or 2 and want to get some of the other keepers inputs....
thanks all for any input...

I've tried RBK P2's - and just started using a Nexus last week (having had a 5002 previous)
I think you'll find its a very easy transition - although the Nexus is far better broken-in than the P2 and can be sized to your hand very easily
The internal set-up is excellent
three internal straps across the hand with a neoprene glove (wrist, glove and fingers)

Pocket with Nash inlay (Scott???)

Catches like a dream with a relatively deep pocket.
Not had any pop-outs yet. Pretty light and holds its shape well IMHO

Mine is standard - although I don't rightly know what a pro-palm spec is - and Scott will do variations IIRC

I am buying used Nexus gloves & could swear I saw pics right here today with them laid out next to a measuring tape, showing exact dimensions. Now I just can't find them. I wanted to compare them to my current RBK gloves. Anyone know where those pics are?

MT how does this compare to the 5002? They look very similar with the exception of the thumb angle. Does the break feel the same?

I was just tellin' Scott that compared to my Flite (by McKenney:)) glove my Nexus is F'n King! (I've had Koho, Brian's and SherWood too)
It is a super well built glove with plenty of protection. Sure it's gonna take a couple more weeks to break in with the thicker palm but that's a small consiquence. Read my review on my Nexus gear if you like.:)

More so than my blocker and leg pads, I have this extreme attachment to my catcher. It has to be PERFECT! I have tried a bunch... Sherwood was crap, McMartin I used for a long time, but it was low level. Every low end Itech and Reebok I try on at the store (all thats available around here) feels like crap.
I use Eagle... I have 3 sets of Eagle gloves, 2 Sentry II and 1 PMW1. Love the Eagle gloves, and they work great for me, so I am reluctant to make a stretch to something else, especially a $400 pro level Vaughn or Reebok or Itech, when I can't even try them on.
I have a set of Smith gloves, and while I feel they are top notch in quality, construction, and protection... they are UBER stiff out of the box, compared to my Eagles which out of the box were like butter.
I would like to try a set of Battram when I order my next custom set, but I am just worried that my picky-ness will leave me unsatisfied on the catcher side.

Has anyone out there used both a Battram Nexus glove and A Vortek VK7 glove that can compare them both?

I ordered a nexus glove last year, and it took me a while to get used to it, plus I had to mod some straps around. I replaced it this year because I replaced my entire set (Show off your Battram gear page 59) I naturally thought that the glove would be the hardest piece to get used to, but I was dead wrong, it was the easiest. I spoke about it with Scott , and he told me that they tweeked around with the mold since last year. I am also VERY picky when it comes to new gear, and let me tell you that the Nexus glove is comfortable, and easy to get used to.

Yes and, for me, they don't compare. Not that I'm saying that the nexus is a bad glove, just that it isn't for me as the VK7 is just about perfect, again, for me.
Any specific questions that you might have, I'd be happy to try to answer.

I have a measly Itech X-Factor 4.8... Child's play.
I got them used of a buddy for cheap though since it's my first set of gear. It's well worn in but the straps no longer tighten up as much as they used to, so the glove does not stay on my hand as tightly as I would like it to.
What would everyone suggest as a good glove to move to from something like the X-Factor 4.8? I don't really have any experience with gloves so I don't really know what's good for what aspects of your game (Deeper pockets? Good for stickhandling? Etc.) I'm not very picky when it comes to the feel though as i've tried on a couple such as Vaughn V2s and such at the store and it didn't really matter since they all feel nicer than my old pair of Itechs.

Ideally, I would like a Battram catcher built like my Eagle Sentry II Pro. The thing is thin, light, closes like a freaking dream, and the palm is bulletproof. Since Eagle is no longer producing goalie gear, I have a problem. I need to figure out what Battram glove is the most similar to the Eagle Sentry II so I can talk to Scott and have one done up.
