View Full Version : Cordura "thread count"?

I've noticed that the cordura being used on players gauntlets seems to have a much "higher thread count" (I use quotations, 'cause I'm not sure that's the right terminology but I'm using bed sheet terminology which I'm sure you'll all understand... well, at least the semi smart ones on here, which seems to be most of you ;):p) then the cordura used on your C/A and the outside gusset of my ****** pads and the back of the gloves. I'm pretty sure that Battram glove and blockers used the higher "thread count" cordura too.

Why is the "higher thread count" used? The player gauntlets would probably see more wear then goalie gear so I wouldn't be concerned about it wearing out faster... it seems to be lighter... and to me it is much more visually appealing too.

Can you give us some insights into this Scott?

You shouldnt have any cordura on your upper body Greg!

That material is a 400 or 410 Nylon, depending where it comes from it will have a different name... the number is the denier. The higher the number, the tougher the fabric. It has to do with the weave and thread... we use 400 X 400 Denier for our products.

Cordura is a 1000 Denier fibre. I beleive it was invented by Dupont.

It has larger strands that make the weave and stronger fibers...

There are now a lot of products that look like Cordura but may be a 500 X 500 denier etc...Some call this Baby Cordura, I have not seen Cordura or Baby Cordura used on pants.

We only use the higher Cordura or 1000 X 1000 when we use Cordura. I am not interested in anything less, simply from a durability point of view. Many companies use 400's on gloves to simply save money, 400 is about 4 bucks a meter and good cordura is 10 - 14 bucks per meter, if asked its to reduce weight, but come on, the difference could only be measured on a very accurate scale.

There is a nylon that is one up from the 400 X 400 which may be 600 X 400 or something like that, and many of the pant guys use it.

One thing on players pants, (i assume this is what you mean when you say gauntlets??) that you need to watch is for burns... the screws on the boards will actually melt the nylon when players rub against the boards and the pants get scuffed appearing marks on them. This may be one of the reasons many have gone to a better than 400 X 400 nylon.

Cordura's drawback for use on pads is that it tends to have snow stick, so for things like knee wings, lifts, calf wings etc... it isnt a good choice because of the snow and the fact it bites into the ice and can slow slides etc down.

With so many pants being produced in Asia, its really hard to say what type of materials that they are using, the factories there built all types of products and could be borrowing technology from backpacks etc... when they do a run of hockey gear.

Gauntlets means gloves... :) Players gloves!

I shall get some pictures of some team mates gloves to share here and we can discuss, I'm surprised that the same material has not made it to goalie gear (that I've seen).

So I asked my buddy for more details on the guantlets (i.e. players gloves!) that he uses. He has a pair of MIA (now Warrior) gloves. The material is tufftek nylon with carbon. It's a much tigher weave of material then cordura, I think it would be a better material then typical cordura for goalie gear.

Does the material have a poly backing on it? Nylon without it usually self destructs in a short time. If it does it sounds like it could be a good material to try out.

I don't know if it has a poly backing or not... Unfortunately I can't cut open his gloves to find out!

How about that crazy material on player gloves that cant be cut by skates. Gotta get some of that!

What material is that? Need pics of that and more info if you've got it.

Oh come on Gregan....just take one of his gloves, make a small three inch cut, and steal some material......He won't notice!

It's that carbon stuff. Tear proof and skate cut proof apparently according to this.
