Right them gimp-oids -

Do I go for a once-in-a-lifetime DaveArt paint job?

Is it worth it?

Will I look like a prick in a decent mask?

I have a cool style in mind...

what was the topic again? I got distracted....

pretty ladies, evil characters, dark imagery, I like the blerbs "all or nothing" and "ready for war" I think this will make for great mask art. Are you seriously considering spending $1200,00 on a paint job though?

It’ll be roughly CA$800-ish

I know

I'm scared too

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event. As a designer (architect) I need it to be done properly or not at all

Between my 961 and new Stacey, I won't be buying a new mask for quite some time.

To get the archetypal ‘custom mask and paint’ is the thing most of us aspire too. Its probably my only opportunity and I’m taking it!

Hey Acme.....I've just realized something;

I originally mentioned DaveArt in Sweden (first page) ...although I've now ordered through Steve Nash at EyeCandyAir

DA was just too expensive ....and Eyecandy won-through on customer service / recommendation from Tony Stacey

They're still not the cheapest but offered a combination of things that suited me (reputation / skills / location / exchange-rate / cost /communication etc etc)

Steph/Steve have got me a place booked for the end of summer...i'll keep you up to date :)

I to ordered a Stacey a little while back. It should be completed sometime around Wednesday. I just have to wait for it to be shipped to CA and eventually when I get the $$$ I'll throw some paint on there. I still have no idea what I want the paintjob to be, other than the backplate. I know with the backplate I'm going with this:
http://www.bluestarmotherssc.com/images/flagBlueStar60.jpg
I'll have to do some red trimming and a blue star with vinyl. For those who don't know, the blue star flag represents you have an immediate family member over seas in the military. For me that'd be my dad in Iraq. When he comes home I'll just remove the vinyl. Then eventually when I finally get hired on to a police department I want a depiction of my badge on the back plate.

When my mask arrives, I'll have to post pictures. And I'm sure I'll post again once I figure out a paint job and get it painted.

http://stockholm.usembassy.gov/usflag/images/serapis.gif < The Serapis Flag 1779:

The Serapis Flag 1779:

Designed with 13 stripes alternating red, white and blue. This flag was raised by Captain John Paul Jones on the British frigate Serapis during the most famous Revolutionary naval battle.

He was born John Paul in Scotland in 1747 and went to sea when he was only twelve years old. By the time he arrived in Philadelphia in 1775 as an experienced sea captain, he had changed his name to John Paul Jones.

After conducting sea raids on the coast of Britain, he took command in 1779 of a rebuilt French merchant ship, renamed the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard to honor Benjamin Franklin. On September 23, 1779, Jones engaged the British frigate Serapis in the North Sea, daringly sailing in close, lashing his vessel to the British ship, and fighting the battle at point-blank range. During the fight two of his cannon burst, and the British captain asked Jones if he was ready to surrender. Replied Jones: "Sir, I have not yet begun to fight." The American crew finally boarded the Serapis after the British had struck her colors, and from the deck of the Serapis they watched the U.S.S.Bonhomme Richard sink into the North Sea.

If I was going to go with any flag inspiration I'd go with the forgotten "civilian" flag.
http://www.civil-liberties.com/art/vertticle.gif

However, I'm definitely thinking I want the paint job to tie into my other hobby of gaming. I'm not sure how but, I know I want to. Lately I've been thinking of doing a Cujo type of thing but using a drop bear instead.
Drop bears are commonly said to be unusually large, vicious, carnivorous (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnivorous) koalas that inhabit treetops and attack their prey by dropping onto their heads from above.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear#cite_note-0) They are an example of local lore intended to frighten and confuse outsiders, and amuse locals, similar to the jackalope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jackalope), hoop snake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoop_snake), wild haggis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_haggis) or snipe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snipe_hunt).My friend and I started the [DBC] Drop Bear Clan "Death from above." Granted our clan only consists of us but, I thought it would be a good way of tying in the gaming.

Arrived today! woot! woot!

Brief Comments: Arrived quickly from Stacey this morning - approximately 4 days travel via TNT. Appropriate packaging and well protected in bubble wrap. Also came with some nice freebies and snazzy denim bag!

0900 mask arrives, 1130 goes straight into my roller game

Frankly, its a delight to wear ...and fits my fat head perfectly. I didn't need to make any adjustments

Extremely light with excellent great vision, I initially wore my dangler ....but I was so pleased with the chin-drop that I will consider removing it

Even though I'm off to get an EyeCandyAir paint job, I'm really pleased with the red on white colour scheme.

Stace has made me a superb mask....thanks :)

Ladies and gentle folk,

When I take my mask to the paint-shop, should I strip it myself first, or is it customary for Mr Painter to do it?*

I only ask because it will involve removing some foam and stuff etc...

(*I am awaiting his email response btw)

acmeguy

Target, I think it's a good idea that you've consulted your painter to see if he will take those steps to ensure a truly profesional job.

The painter should have the experience dealing with the foam removal (and replacement) etc. as to not damage anything, you could be just wasting your time trying to do your own prep work as it may not be up to profesional standards.

goalie#61
06-25-2008, 11:46 AM
Usually Mr painter will do it and re install the foam, put the cage on with out scratching the clear etc.

You can do it yourself if you wanted, but Mr painter shouldn't charge extra!!!

:)

Target, No probs and thanks. I love goalie masks and goalie mask art. Earlier when you displayed some pics of your ideas, I imagined how they would translate onto a mask. I find it truly interesting how different painters interpret the ideas given them.

It will be neat to compare your finished mask with my mental image.

And of course I work on all masks, even those plastic Itechs.

Sorry old chap …but I am really surprised that someone else didn’t beat us to it a few years back!

The books started coming out in the 90’s …and the first film [i]should[i] have kick-started a the idea in a few heads

There are many other SC books however – and I’d recommend Yellow Bastard as a cool alternative to Marv… I don’t think for a second that you’d need to change plans

Haha yeah, Yellow Bastard is an amazing story. I remember when I was in the 2nd grade, a friend of mine showed me the book (let's see, I'm 22 now, so that was.... A HELLUVA LONG TIME AGO) and I kept hoping for them to make it into a movie.

A week ago I had an EUREKA moment and devised a fitting system which GUARANTEES a 100% perfect fit WITHOUT the costs of a custom mask. It can be adapted to any and all models I produce. It's impossible to go wrong - I repeat IMPOSSIBLE. Years ago I taught at an art academy and we used a similar system back then but it was only recently I figured this could be adapted to fit masks with a minor modification.

I will confess I'm walking around with a big :) on my face these days.

I have to agree with the others here...superb mask.

MY youngest spent this last season in his new Mach 10H. He has been thrilled with its performance.

Stacey Space Tech Mach 10H:

The fit is superb, an almost identical match to his head. Stace did indicate that two spots on the mask might be snug initially but would relax a bit. It was just as he said. Stacey built Gator a beefed up back plate when we mentioned the number of times he seems to take impacts there. Its impossible to see in the pic but it has a serious ridge line and foam pocket inside to reduce the risk.

The mask is extremely light coming in under 2lbs. I havent had a chance to put it on a scale yet. Sight lines are very good...all in all as expected. A very nice mask. Gator being used to the gel interior find that he feels the heat more with the foams. I am not sure what is up with hte cage. It def doesnt look like the stock SS cage. We didnt talk about a powder coating and Masked Expressions doesnt do the anodizing on plated SS. Titanium? no idea....

The mask had an original metal flake red paint but since it went straight from Stacey to Masked Expressions I only saw Pictures. The Paint is a space type scene(fitting since it is the space tech model. The Hawks eye seems to follow you. The image of the hawk is semi transperant, allowing the viewer to see thru to the star field behind it. Team colors Red and Blue lightning split the sides and the Chinese Script For his nickname. Modern era translation is Alligator.

The only 2 update items to this are that in the coming season the interior will be upgraded with the Gel interior. Cooler and to eliminate a little bit of ring he gets from being head shots. Caged isnt a problem at all but anything off the shell is a bit loud for him. His masks have been Maltese gel for the pior three seasons, one also being a stacey(jr pro). With this mask, i feel it will increase protection but the important factors are more on reaching that next comfort level.

The cage, which I believe was the titanium, took one heck of a shot that destroyed one of the middle bars so it was back to the original from his JR Pro. I will add a pic of the cage to the gallery of the previous. I saw the shot rock his head back. Gator went to the bench where I met him, swapped out HTE cage in a couple minutes and away he went. His only ocmplaint being a bit of ringing in the ears. Cant blame the quality of the mask for anything. It was a rocket of a shot from very close range (one of his own team mates, of course)

Dont we all! Especially with hte little buggers sprouting like mad. At least his Mask and Pants will fit his coming u15 season. On the positive note I can now sell my Heaton 6800 pro rig and will be sporting his oneseason used, outgrown Smith 5000's (2000 graphics)

I was stunned by the price after expecting the compounding issues of the Euro > US Dollar and prospect of wire transfer fees. Stace responded to my intial request for info with a price that made this one an easy choice, offering to create a beefed up back plate and the custom fit. No surprises, one small shipping delay (a few days so who cares, right?) and a ship direct to the painter. Again, the mask came to My Son finished, sight unseen until opening the box. The masks fit and feel being outstanding and the paint done to a "T"

This is my last mask purchase for my "little" guy so its out of my hands but I am betting Stacey and Masked Expressions will be suiting the top of his rig for life when this last one gets out grown.

I was incorrect as to which cage. After several practices he wanted to try his old SS cage from the old JR Pro. At that practice the SS got rocked so now it is back to the new Mach10's cage.

Stace,
could you clarify for me on the Cage that came with 10H mask?

On a side note, his STACEY JR PRO is available to any who think they have use for it, intending it for a specific youth goalie and NOT for resale. Maybe Marc Wells(Colonial) can remember its exact size as the original owner but with the maltese gel interior it will fit up to a "7" fitted cap size. At the time that Gator outgrew, it was just wide enough but not deep enough. measure was 23cm's across the temple, If I recall. Stace, I dont have his measures from our order, feel free to post them or the original masks if you think it will help another decide if the JR PRO will fill yet another youth goalies need.

In keeping with the fact that Marc Wells never did cash the check we sent for the purchase of the mask, one heck of a guy: Pictures of the mask on request. I can only ask that on your honor, any who takes this is not trying to resell and turn a fast buck.

1. Cost is shipping only
2. Comes with the full Maltese Gel SPS system(other wise it will need refoam)
3. mask will need a cage and hardware
4. THIS IS NOT A CERTIFIED MASK.....For those in CANADA it is a GIFT and not a sale. I myself wouldnt hesitate to pass this down if Gator had a younger Brother. The mask shell is IMHO as good as the day it was made and easily safe for any level PeeWee-Bantam (95'-98') Other than a few paint chips, maltese gel interior and its need of a cage, its in Supurb condition and has been well cared for.
5. Taker of the mask must have an intended YOUTH goalie and NOT be resold to turn a fast buck, PLEASE!

PeeWee Minor (11yrs) STACEY JR PRO very light carbon fiber

Bantam Major= 14yrs Signifcant Neck showing so added neck protection "in photo: maltese gel throat/clav combo" a must with this short chin and jaw line. Back plate beggining to be pushed outward beyond back edge of shell.

Mike - the mask fits 55-56 cms. Don't need to look at the order form. It was darn nice of Mark to help you like that. He sent me a bunch of mask parts for free. He's in my will.

Cage is stainless steel 140 guage.

I'll add the pics to my action gallery this week.

The Stacey JR Pro has found a new home where it should be able to play for many years to come. Thanks To Marc Wells (colonial) for providing and Stace for creating. It served my son very well.

I was lucky enough to snag this mask. It is coming out to California and will be given to the Disney GOALS program. (you can google it) They work with underpriveleged kids after school providing them with a free ice hockey program. It's not anything high level like travel, but it keeps these kids out of trouble, and gets them on the ice learning sportsmanship, teamwork, etc. etc. They are always in need of gear and I know the kids will be stoked to have a nice mask!
