View Full Version : Seatbelt style nylon straps are garbage

After using my Fury pads for 2 game sessions, the buckles on the outside part of the nylon straps (the female buckle) have undone themselves no less than 5 times leaving the straps hanging down the side of my pads. One time it happened twice in 10 minutes. I know they can be fixed with tape/glue but I shouldn't have to be doing that.

Everything else is great though. :)

Make sure you feed the excess strap back through the ladderloc with the teeth.

I can hold a pad up by the buckle and shake it and it stays put, if you have the strap fed through correctly, it shouldnt come undone.

I've strapped them every way possible and they still come undone. I guess just constant movement of my legs pulls on them too much. What kind of glue would work well with this kind of strap? I'll probably just wrap tape around them though.

I find mine slipping off when they are wet. Quite annoying. I make a point every two weeks to look at the straps and tighten them. When I do that regularly, I keep them in place no matter what.

i've been using mine for just over a year now with all my straps being the nylon strapping.

I've never once had them slide off with 5+ sessions a week.

Same here. I love the nylon straps. I'd never go back to all leather.

I don't have Battram pads (yet), but my nylon straps on my pads are awesome... messed with their tightness for the first couple of weeks that I owned them and I haven't touched them once in the past year since.

He's not talking about nylon straps in general, he's talking about the new seatbelt material.

If you find that this is happening consistently with the same straps, it *may* be that the batch of ladderloks you have is just slightly off-spec. That combined with the fine, tight weave and 'slick' surface of the seatbelt material could let it wiggle loose a little, then undo itself.

I'd suggest adding a second set of tri-glides, ladderloks, strap-clips or anything else that might put a little extra hold on there. MEC or REI will have them. Pull a strap off your pads, go in, play around, and come away with a handful of options.

If it's really driving you crazy, and you know where you want the straps permanently, use contact cement to glue them. However, I'm positive this is overkill, not to mention detrimental to the pads.

Army/Navy stores have them too. Pretty cheap too.

I didn't know that there was a second type of nylon strap that could be reffered to. In that case I take back what I said. I have no idea how the seatbelt straps perform.

Got a pic of the strap and how you have it fed though the buckle?

EdwardL

No and I cant take one since I wraped electrical tape around them. They were fed however Scott sent them to me fed.

Normally they are fed all the way when you get them so you'll be able to adjust them easier. To lock it just do what Scott said and feed it back through. If your real paranoid about it slipped just take a little needle and thread and sew it. That will be the cleanest and most esthetically pleasing way of fixing the nylon strap at a specific length.

I also remember people complaining about fraying on their nylon straps. If this happens for you then just singe the edge of it with a lighter and your good to go.

Everytime they slid out I'd try to lace them a different way but nothing worked. A few wraps of electrical tape is working fine.

I am having the same problem, I tried burning the ends just a little so that it would catch before coming off. This method did not work and I lost the strap well playing hockey in Holland last weekend.

If you guys are feeding them through right then they shouldn't be slipping. Anyway of you guys taking a picture of how your doing it so we can tell you if your doing them wrong or not? I've had nylon straps for the past 4 years and haven't had them come undone on me.

I tried a pad today and actually held it by the buckle and shook it and it didnt move at all, it has to be fed through, then back through the opposite way again and it locks in really tight.

The only way I can imagine that the strap is getting out of the buckle or the lock is is the strap is loose through it and the pads are loose on his leggs without contstant pressure of the strap in the lock. It would be the loose strap getting shaken arround and sometimes tugged sliding through the lock.
Does that make any sence. It is the only way I picture the strap comming out. But the most accurate test in the shop would be to mimick what Ed L is doing.

My pad straps do not have tension on them all the time as I have them a bit lose, i have not changed anything on them since I have gotten my pads so they would be setup how scott does it.

Scott - can you post some pics of how it should be done? Maybe settle this thing once and for all?

Consider this clip for reference.

Step 1: Disconnect the strap so that you have the strap you wish to feed in one hand and the buckle in the other.

Step 2: Feed strap through the closest hole.

Step 3: Feed strap over top of the center bar and through the second hole.

Step 4: Wrap the strap over top of the center bar and through the first hole. So you have the strap fed through the first hole twice and the second once. You should only be able to see the nearest edge of the buckle.

I had my 4th strap come undone last night during a game, the strap was connected the way the pads are shipped. Any idea for how to fix this? The above method does not seem to work as the material is too short.

Scott Battram

I think the solution is longer straps.

bengal34

I had to make a couple longer straps when I got my blockades. You can easily pick up a spool for cheap on ebay. Then just cut to the right length and singe the edges with a lighter.

would you be able to send me longer nylon so that I can redo them?

Scott Battram
04-07-2008, 04:40 PM
They are on the way Russ!

I switched to a 9" strap this gives you enough length to run it back through and lock it in.

I included enough straps to redo the straps and buckles.

Hey Scott,
Would I be able to get longer straps as well?
