Well, I got a new C/A today ( Thanks Sean and Dave! ). It's an Itech RX-9. :)

I've always worn Vaughn C/A's, all three previous units have been the 5500. The first was a pro return that I donated to Three for his hockey program for kids, the second and third have been light to moderately used units I picked up on ebay.

Here is my current 5500.

The main problems I have with it are:
1) the length of the belly... it's just too short
2) the rib protection is scant at best, upper and lower
3) shots to the bicep sting like a mother

It rides fairly high on the neck, and is a size medium. I like the way it fits overall, with the exception of the short belly. The arm length is perfect and the protection around the neck and collar are great.

But after three in a row of the same thing, I thought I'd mix it up a bit and check out the new Itech RX-9. Sean on the GSBB had a brand new one in Large size, and I've seen the X-Wing model in the pro shop, so I had a little bit of an idea about them.

Here are the pix of the new unit:

The arms a bit long right out of the bag. I'm going to have to shorten them by an inch or so. It also sits a little lower around collar when I'm just standing straight up, but when I'm playing and in stance, there is no gap between my chin and the C/A at all.

Protection wise, I haven't really tested it yet. Had a game tonite where I only saw maybe 20 shots, and none of them had much heat on them.

As far as comfort, well, it's brand new and it's a little stiff, but I can tell that it's going to break in fairly easily after only playing one game in it. The arms are the worst part, mostly because they are too long in their stock position. I think I can relace them in with about an inch less of length.

The nicest part is it's about 4 inches longer in the belly, and two inches more on each side on the ribs. That will certainly cover that nasty gap I've had for the last 3 years. Every now and then I would take one right between the C/A and the pants, and damn that would sting. This should leave no weak spots at all.

Weightwise, I think it's a tad lighter, but not much. It is bigger though, so I imagine a direct size to size comparison would prove it lighter than it's Vaughn counterpart that I have been wearing for so long. On the ice, it's hard to tell whether or not it's better ventilated yet... just one game in and it's been pretty warm here, so it's pretty humid in the rink, more than normal.

If anyone wants any other closeups, please let me know. Glad to oblige.
I'll update with some full gear pics when I get a chance, to show how it compares and covers the gaps better.

Ok, I'm a moron. Can someone move this to the REVIEWS thread? Thanks!:D

I've worn the 5500 for a few years now and I too thought it was a little short in the belly even when paired up with Vaughn pants ( you would think these companies would make thier systems work together without gaps ) The belly portion would rise up get twisted and tucked into my pants from all the flopping around I do. I now tie the body armour to the pants in front and haven't had any incidents. I do agree with you that it's lacking protection in some areas, that credit card sized "pad" at the collar bone definitely needs beefin' up.

I think I'll keep washing and tweaking this unit for now, I really don't like getting used to new equipment. Please tell me, what c/a stands for.

C/A - Chest/Arm unit[/quote]

Geeeeeze, I gotta stop embarrassing myself out here.

I meant to also say that your new C/A ( ha, ha, thank you ) obviously has more protection. That's swell, will it cost you in mobility?

and why does it seem all the new C/A's are mainly white? It's gonna' look nasty sooner.

I always wonder who c/a units are designed for. Do these goalies have the longest arms or what?

The Itech looks tight. It dosen't look like it will take up any more space than the 5500.

that actually is done for what is called the 95P
95% of the average man from such age to such age.
they use that hight, weight, arm length etc etc.
you can look them up in any ergonomic guide.

Sadly, they didn't think about the fact that goalies are such a select group that these numbers wouldn't be a 95P but much less.

I belong to the 95P: 6.1, 82 kilo, little to no fat, regular build, all limbs are within the size boundaries. Lucky me :D

pun.

It just seems that everyone needs to shorten the arms... So the 95P basically excludes the 5% of men with super long arms?

Hey Manute Bol. Tough break playa.

Remember when c/a used to be regular or full right specific?

3 games in, and it's getting easier to put on and move the arms. The only area I am really noticing now is right in the arm pit when I lean over all the way to pick up a puck or put the stick down on the ice. It feels like the top corners of the chest pad are sticking out into that area. I'll have to take a closer look without the jersey on and see just how much is hanging up in there. It might be that those corners will loosen up a little and not dig in, or I might have to do some other minor surgery to round them off or taper them a little bit.

I haven't adjusted the arm length yet... maybe this weekend.

As far as shots being deadened... this thing does a great job. I've had a couple of pretty hard shots that I normally would have had a little trouble pulling off a gut trap or deaden them on my chest, but they dropped like flies.

I was going ... "Well.... THAT was easy!" :D

I don't mind the white at all. Heck, Bauer makes them ALL white, or at least they still did a year ago. As long as you don't let it get looking like Sloth's CA with fungus GROWING on it, you'll be fine. :p

I prefer the white c/a myself. Classy.
