I was wondering what are some of the better ( or worse ) goalie nick names. How did you get that name? Personally I was never given one :(
and I know it's holding me back from being a much kooler goalie 'cause there's always a blank spot on my masks' chin where a name should go.:D

Punisher
04-18-2008, 02:57 AM
The punisher,

I got it when i played my first year of semi pro,
My Finish D started calling me that because i was a master in getting the puck that was a sure goal.
He told me, " Man, you are the punisher, you punish players that think they passed you and are going to score an easy goal, i don't know how you do it but you always seem to get a part of you between the puck and the goal-line."

My old coach (a nut from Quebec) used to call me Cousineau, because i always trained with a Cousineau jersey from the Harfangs.

and when i was really little they called me shadowman, i was faster then the puck (in ducking, dodging and diving out of it's way that is, puckfear :D )

AL-E-Gator
04-18-2008, 05:03 AM
Well, here goes for the Gator. My Fiancee' named me AL-E-Gator:D, as my first name is Alex, and I've no problem in snapping back (trash talkin') at opponents. She likes it, and I'm keeping it for now.

While in Medical School, I got involved in the Oklahoma 'Tough-Man' contest, where my style of fighting was more like a 'brawl'. A boxer with more skill won out, and I took 2nd in the State of Oklahoma Light Heavyweight. However, my title of "Doctor Doom" :Dhung on for a while.

In the 80's, I was never one to back down from a confrontation (ala Billy Smith of the NY Islanders). My last name is Thermos, and I was dubbed the name of "THERMINATOR". Didn't lose too many of my 'confrontations', and therefore deserved the reputation for my excess testosterone that I wished to flex back then. I've since learned that bruises on the face of a Doctor tend to scare his patients - so I've stuck to more 'trash-talkin' these days - and the AL-E-Gator name will probably stay with me 'till I hang up the pads . . .:D

Any others out there?

At my summer job, which has a ball (dek) hockey tournament every summer, they call me Dominator. I've won 4 of the 7 years and my last name is Domiano... and usually I'm the oldest goaltender in the tournament... currently 31. I work at an amusement park, so most of the employees are high school or college aged. My team to summers ago was called mid-life crisis because we avg. 29ish while the other teams where late teens to early 20's in avg age. We won :)

DBIRD was first, which was nothing more than a shortened version of my name. Then guys found out I am a retired brigadier general, which is a single star, so they now call me star.....Not that I am in any way at all.

Head or Dome

I have a massive melon. The problem is I could never get that on a mask. Too many connotations...

Sieve, Swiss Cheese, and "You Suck" are what I hear mostly. :) Actually I haven't had any goalie nicknames, when I played baseball I was "Black & Decker" because I had a black bat, jacket and batting glove. When I competed in Karate tournaments, I was "The Red Devil" due to my red hair & goatee. I know- they were all lame.

Not a nickname for me, but one of my teams wanted to put phrases like "sorry goalie", "incoming", "look out!" on the backs of their jerseys instead of names because they were particularly slow (they knew this), and constant odd-man rushes were a norm for these guys. Great group of guys though, and part of the reason why I still play on their team is because of the awesome 3-on-1 practice time I get and they simply crack me up.

Sadly, all the women I play with tend to shy away from nicknames, so they have never given me one. The men's teams have never given me a nickname that I know of and if they have I'm not sure that I want to know what it is. I generally end up with just the shortened version of my name, Bets. That's what I've painted on mask chin.

chakal
04-19-2008, 01:08 PM
Well, my pro-wrestling name is my nickname now. Chakal, it also became my company's name.

But other than that, when playing minor hockey, they used to call me by my familly name, like we were all doing. Some of my opponents were calling me "Ron" on the ice. I used to have Ron Hextall's Quebec Nordiques mask and I was really good at swinging my stick! LOL Seriously, I was good at little pokes on the calves in front of my net.

Have a couple.

Wil-Bo - of course a play on the T-Bo nick name

Will.I.Am - my legal name is William so....

W - a bunch of my friends all call each other by our first letters. kinda childish but it has stuck now for over 6yrs. LOL. saying "W" actually takes longer than saying "Will" which always makes me laugh....:D

The TBG

All mine were stupid...

First was Puck Nazi. I had a tendency to, at least once or twice per game, make a save that I had no business making. I had a teammate who always enjoyed saying "No Soup For You!" whenever I made one of those.

I had never seen Seinfeld EVER so I only knew it as a SportsCenter catch phrase. Ironically, I decided to watch a rerun of Seinfeld once, and it was the Soup Nazi episode. I laughed.

Second up, Giggles. Only one guy ever called me that, but he did it all the time. He said it was kinda creepy that I would actually laugh during goal-mouth scrambles (which I still do) and after odd-man rushes. Some goalies freak out, I laugh.

Right now, my nickname is Canada. One, because I wear a black and red "Canada" jacket. Two, because it's no secret that I want to move across the border, and three, because despite the fact that everyone knows I'm from Philadelphia; I'm black, I play hockey, and I don't watch the NFL or the NBA. Therefore, I "have to be Canadian. That's the only logical explanation."

04-20-2008, 01:43 PM
mine is turtle, cuz my last name is turturici and most of the guys couldnt pronounce it, (kinda a lot to say on the ice)

dylan33
04-20-2008, 03:04 PM
Mine is "Big Bastard", because this year on my bantam team I was the tallest at 6 foot 1, and heaviest at 190 lbs, and one practice a guy on my team couldn't score on me and said "Dylan, you are a big bastard! I have nowhere to shoot!" and it stuck. Even the parents and coaches called me by my nickname.

04-21-2008, 07:42 AM
My only nickname was given to me by my college teammates/dormmates. Flounder. Thank goodness it didn't follow me out of Boston...

If you saw me play back then, the meaning would have been obvious!

MEAT.

It originated this past season where I was just finishing up playing my 2nd back to back game of the night. My friend's team needed a sub for their game and begged me to play. I didn't really want to do 3 in a row, not to mention play the 11:30pm game... but then she said "I'll cook you meat...." and I went.. Oh? "Prime rib..." Quickly it turned into "Will play for MEAT" and then everybody just started calling me MEAT.

So now, whenever people are wanting me to play for their team for a tourney, they bribe me with small farm animals lol.

Jambon.
French for Ham.

last name Hamilton.

Usually go by Hammy, but on the other board there were already some Hammy's and Hammbone's etc...

I am bilingual in the true Canadian fashion, growing up along the Quebec border in Northern Ontario, so I have had my nickname francophonized on occasion.

The whole family is Hammy: Mrs. Hammy, HammySr. my brother Hammy, and I am Young Ham.

yours truly,

My brother has played in Quebec and his nickname was Gros Jambon.

Because his first name is Hes which if you put a P after it (HESP) means jambon or ham. His coach a Quebecian foulmouthed madman, told people in an alcohol intoxicated evening that my brothers name meant jambon in dutch.

So naturally they started calling him Gros Jambon (he's not tall but build like a brick house)
hence his name.
we still receive xmass cards addressed to gros jambon and family LOL
It's a funny one, i like it. :D:D

Our team ringer from Canada started calling me Sieve to bust my stones. Well, after a playoff shootout victory over the best team in the league, which we had never beaten before, he said he couldn't call me Sieve anymore. Being superstitious, I told him not to stop until our luck changed. It hasn't yet, but I don't think I'll be putting "Sieve" on my mask anytime soon!

When I was in high school my friends started calling me Howard Daulton, or HD for short. They told me it was some red-headed hockey player that looked like me and played for either Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver depending on the year. For some reason, I could never find this guy. But this was the 80's, and before the internet, and we didn't have cable TV or anything, so I figured it was legit - my friends seemed to know too much about him for it not to be. He was never in the box scores though, so I wasn't quite sure what the deal was. But anyway, about 5 years later, I found out that HD didn't really stand for Howard Daulton, but Howdy Doody! Needless to say, I wasn't pleased.

I play with a couple of different teams/groups, and people from all had taken to calling me Pads early last winter season. Not sure if it was cuz they just didn't know my name then or not :) but it stuck and has somehow carried over into summer league...

Trap29
05-03-2008, 10:33 PM
Mine started out as Trapper, back in highschool I would catch everything, my coach used to say that my "Trapper" was the only piece of equipment I needed to wear. That eventually got shortened down to Trap based on a long story involving a sand trap on the island of Guam during my first deployment. I get called Trap more than anything else considering SSgt Henrichsmeyer takes too much time at work.

Okay, so I was doing a little surfing online today to try to find a nickname for my son, in order to possibly include it on his mask! And my search brought me here!! Bizzare coincidence, no??

Yeah, I'm the one who contacted you yesterday about possibly doing my son's mask. Check your e-mail:)

Gasman
05-09-2008, 11:01 PM
Everywhere else I am Gasman....but......The guys in the league I run for my school board nicknamed me "sleep country" (after the bed store) because my pads looked so big at one point. I guess it was because a couple of seasons ago I used an all white setup and being white...they looked larger. They used to bring out a tape measure before games for a joke.

Problem is......my pads are NHL legal now so that just doesn't fit now because my gear is smaller than the other guys with the ancient 14" wide Brian's pads.

I like mine... sets the bar low. I mean, think about it. You hear that "Timmaayy" is going to be playing net for you, and suddenly you imagine you're going to be stuck with some wheelchair-bound kid who suffers from ADD and a serious speech impedement, and then I show up. Suddenly, I don't look like such a bad option. :p

well i had 2 nickname
when i was in quebec playing the use to call me Junior because i was the 3rd goalie of my team and practice goalie and me and another goalie from the team had the same style he was bigger then me and i was little
so some guys on the team before a minor hockey event walk in the room and rename me Junior and they took my tag name in the dressing room and change it to Junior

here in Alberta every league in Calgary know me as Frecnhie
well that one is pretty simple i'm french....lol

One kid from my team a couple years ago called me Twitch cause I never stop moving and my eyes go back and forth by themselves. This year team called me Francis cause it was their old goalies last name and they thought I was angrier than him. So I use both, depends on what city I'm in.

My son's spring team decided to put nicknames on the back of their jersey's. It turned out to be a great idea. My son is the one in the middle "Bug". We picked Bug because we always play punch bug in the car and he is always bugging me about something. Plus it bugs the opponents when he keeps the puck out of the net.

05-27-2008, 12:38 PM
this season one of the boys gave nick names to whole team, daughter's was goose, for the shut outs she would get. her one goalie coach would call her sassie which sticks. but no nick names will go on her helment as she doesnt need a nick name on it, everyone knows whos she is.
as for martysgirl commenting on no names she knows of, i'm sure at one time or another the "B" word might work as daughter is always called a beotch by the other team. ;)

TenaciousVD
05-27-2008, 09:42 PM
I've only had two that have really stuck.

The first was Spidey because the gear from minor hockey was a bit small and I looked quite gangly. Also, my style was more along the lines of flopping around and then an arm or leg would shoot out and stop the puck. Pretty much the only person that calls me that anymore is one of my old coaches.

The latest one that's stuck is Perogy. One of my teammates heard the French pronounciation of my last name (Perreault) and went from there. It could also be due to the size of my gut at the time.

Every once and a while I'll get called Gilbert or Yanic (last name's the same).

One guy called me sunshine at stick and puck, no idea why but it was just weird since my friend's dad always called me that.

Tenacious VD... Jack Black shoulda gone with that. Has a lot more zing to it. :D

Hounsy
05-28-2008, 11:05 AM
Hounsy and it's odd spelling has been my Nickname for twenty plus years now. Pronounced Houn-z, only difference at hockey is often when not rushed they pronounce it Hoooouuuun-zzzzzz in the way that fans chant/boo the opposing goalies name at NHL games.

Dom's nickname comes from his second game in net, 2/10/07. We were playing a team that had spanked the pants off us at our previous meeting (something like 8-1 or 10-2 in a 30-minute game), back before the kid was a goalie. Well, he faced 20 shots in this 30-minute game and stopped 19 of them... his team won 2-1 (which was a miracle in itself, as they only had about six SOG the entire game!).

Afterward, his coach told us he was naming him "Dom" after Dominic Hasek, but NOT because he was a flopper. Coach said that when Hasek first started playing, he'd watch a game on tv and say things like, "Boy, Hasek got lucky on that one!" and "Wow, that sure was a lucky stop!" When he realized how many times per game Hasek got "lucky", he realized that NOBODY gets THAT lucky THAT many times per game ... as unconventional as it looked, Hasek was simply putting a body part in the right place at the right time to stop the puck.

Anyway, during this second game in net, when the kid was stopping anything and everything that came his way, Coach kept saying to himself on the bench, "Boy, he got lucky on that one!" and "Wow, that sure was a lucky stop!" When he realized that the kid got "lucky" 19 out of 20 times in a 30-minute game, he realized that there was something more than 'luck' involved.... and a new Dominator was born. :D

Fast forward to this year's team, where only two of his teammates were also on his team the previous year. It was about two months into the season when I was talking to one of the other (new) parents about my kid, and I was using his legal name. Finally the other parent asked me, "Who are you talking about????" Turns out that all the new parents on the team thought my kid's legal name was Dominic, because EVERYONE in the rink called him Dom! :p

He also got the name Mini-Hexy or Little-Hexy last summer after his performance in the shootout contest at the "adavis and Moore00 West Michigan <site that can't be named> Goalie Clinic". You really need the visual to understand where that name comes from, though: http://youtube.com/watch?v=p6jJ8qtoNUI That's my boy!!!! :D

All my friends are lazy. Anthony is too hard to say, so they all call me ant. No capital letters either, just ant.

I had a few different ones, when I played minor hockey it was "Two-Nine" because I always wear that number no matter what. Now I play Sr "A" and the house announcer always calls me "Hail Mary" because I always go for the long pass or shot, it kinda stuck and now I have it on my helmet. Everyone calls me that.

Fun times.

my name is Scott, so i get Scotty and the folks that i am good friends with pretty much go with that.

other than that its 'hey goalie'.

i have Scotty on the backplate of my mask, but i guess its too hard for forwards to actually read.

even guys i have played with for years typically just call me goalie.

i get that enough that i would just introduce my self as just 'hey goalie' when i subbed in on other teams lol.

My name is Kevin but I seem to get called Ken and David alot go figure, I get called "Grav" alot because of my posting name Gravitykillr, I've probably been using this name to post and play online games for almost 4 years so if I ever have the money to get a customer helmet I'll probably have that name put on it somwhere. My son and my Dad are also named Kevin so I like to use that the joke that my Dad is Big Kevin my Son is Little Kevin and I'm "Hey You" so a few people in my family have started calling me that. But I think mostly It's Ken or David I get called it so often I just respond now because it's easier than trying to correct people lol

In fact, very few people actually call me by my first name once they learn what my last name is.

Just read this thread & realized that I have never really been called by a nickname...except for Paulie (my name is Paul). Not sure if that is bad or good.
Suppose this might qualify but it's at work only. I am supervisor to around 75 pharmacsts & technicians & they sometimes call me "Our Fearless Leader". On second thought, that just dosen't cut it as a nickname, does it? Damn!

Knew a guy once (not a goalie) who had one arm shorter than the other. His nickname:

"arkansaw" and "redneck" around the local rink. all because this very strange kid called me it after ranting about how southerners can't play hockey. so he for some reason thought i was trash(though he couldn't score on me) and then it stuck. its a temporary one though. and from the ladies:cool: cboy. because girls can't pronounce Roy corroectly and thought that they would sound similar aha

Luckily that you can spell 'correctly' and 'long island' correctly, otherwise us girls would be hopelessly confused. ;)

I don't have any nicknames; I'm the only Dorian anywhere I go. So, people just call me that.

Stinks, though. No nicknames. People often confuse my name for another: Damien, Adrian, Dwayne (Seriously, did I slur?). And I can never find my name on a novelty license plate. All I ever find is Bort. I mean, who names their kid Bort anyways?

...32...my number, I never let my name be put on jersey...oh the shame!!!..LOL

For years I always requested the number 32...it should have been "42"...it's the answer to life, the universe, and everything...

I get called Johnny Roy every now and then, because Patrick Roy was/is my favorite goalie, and my first name is John so yeah. . .

I also get called Hardaciousness. It just happened one day, my peewee A team just started calling me it. My last name is Hardy, and i dont know where the aciousness came from hahaha

My nickname is DoodlePants because, well, I have ulcerative colitis and although I've never had any accidents in my hockey gear...

Anyway...

Goats34

As you can probably tell, everyone calls me Goats or some variation of that. Goats, Goaty, Goater, Goatboy, Goaters. You get the idea. I've never figured out why they pluralize it, though.

When teammates ask "what's your name, goalie?" I usually respond with "Goats, like plural of the animal." It's embroidered on all my gear, including my neckguard. Everyone at the rink knows me as Goats.

My last name is Gauthier (pronounced like Goat-chee-yay).

I was always Goats growing up. A guy on my junior highschool team called me Gauch once (pronounced like Go-tch), which turned into Gooch, which somehow ended up Choad, which stuck for two years. Then I moved and at my senior high I was called Goats again.

Like Jambon, my whole family is Goats - dad is Papa Goats, I'm Goats, and my younger brother is Baby Goats, or sometimes Kid.

My friends called me Ermac, this name stuck with me.

I got called "BIG E" at hockey, because my name is Eric. And i fill the net well. There are two differences between me and Eric Lindros though, I'm a goalie and I've never had a concussion, so a difference of about 200 concussions.

I get called Frenchy, or French Dip.

Because these bozos down here in Oklahoma think that every Habs fan is French.

I'm not even a little bit French but the name stuck.

I was given a nickname as a kid. (thanks to my friend Mike L.)I was called Gumby, I could do full splits in all 3 ways. Refs used to tell me I hope ur not planning on having kids someday! But I will happily report now at 30yrs old my junk worked and I have 2 wonderful children girl n boy! As far. As Gumby goes , I stopped playing hockey for 6yrs when my son was born and jus got back into it this passed January . Went 9-1 in regular season and 3-3 in the playoff lost in the finals but during the playoffs I slightly tore my groin and continued to play in our last final game (2-0 series sweep 3-0,3-0,losses to other team) I tore my groin in 4 places and now in physical therapy waiting for fall league to start! As I will me ready, hopefully more flexable LOL so maybe Gumby can live again!

I was given the nickname "Spanky" by my Fraternity Brothers. It's not what you think! Truse me! While pledging a few guys thought my last name was Spankovic. It's Bankovic. When I informed them they were wrong they started calling me Spanky. It stuck. And the name has carried over into hockey.

Since I'll hit the big 5-0 this summer, I've had more than a few 'nicknames' over the years - variations of my name - Alexander Thermos (Thermogiannes)

When I was in Bantams - had a mask painted like Gary Simmons, hence 'Cobra'
When in College - I badly injured an eye during my Sophomore year, hence 'Cyclops'
When 'Arnold' was acting - they varied things and called me 'THERMINATOR'
While in Medical School, I fought in the statewide light heavyweight 'toughman contest, and was nicknamed "Dr. Doom" (took second in '91)
Because I'm fairly quiet - but have a nasty bite - since I've been in my 40's they'd call me GATOR
And with my Tony the Tiger Pads, and my ability to deliver a good two-hander to the back of the legs of crease violators (ala Billy Smith), they often call me TIGER

Mrs. Gator still calls me Gator however . . .

I've been called rabbi, cause my last name is rabishaw, billy the kid or just kid cause I go by billy.

I got the nickname Bishop, which I got because of two reasons:

1. The high school I went to is Bishop Smith Catholic High and most of my friends went to the public school in our town.
2. I was an alterboy (not what you think, sick perverts) when I was younger

"CAPSO"
In juniors -early 90's, in Las Vegas (hockey not huge in the desert) The league handed out jerseys with iron-on letters for your name on the back. My mom, who couldn't cook either, tried to iron my last name "CARSON" on it. She burned the crap out of the R -looked like a P, and completely fried off the N. CAPSO it was. Pfffff

fattyrich

Always has and always be Fathead, due to my large cranium.

My oldest (the goalie) has his Dad's flaw (large head), and has always been tall for his age (11 yrs old, and almost 5' 5'). The rest of his body is still trying to catch up, and has not filled out, so for him it's always been "Pumpkinhead". Working an appropriate mask to highlight his nickname. Hopefully, we'll have something ready in a month or two.

When Auld was a Canuck, my friends noticed that he and I both had shaved heads. Thus, I was dubbed "Alex Bald".

When I was EIGHT YEARS OLD, my best friend actually referred to me only as "Mentalcase".

Mine is "Mick" because I'm second generation Irish on one side of my family and third generation on the other. Pretty much truth in advertising but it almost always gets a weird response from people making my gear when I tell them what to monogram on my stuff.

not a goalie nickname, but when i get my mask painted, this is going on my chin (Either that or my last name)

In grade 5, i had one of the best teachers. Mr. T. I handed in a test about christmas, and ever since that he started calling me "L6G9"

he was calling me that because my printing was so messy my name looked like that

"Clarkie" - standard play on the last name Clarke, though a couple of my college teammates called me "Sparky"

"BC", my initials, sometimes just "B"

On my team's blog page, I'm listed on the roster as Brian "I have three more games tonight" Clarke

During my run as a practice goalie in Hartford, I was usually referred to as "target"

And the one given to me at a **** clinic - "Best Goalie Ever"

Well, my pro-wrestling name is my nickname now. Chakal, it also became my company's name.

But other than that, when playing minor hockey, they used to call me by my familly name, like we were all doing. Some of my opponents were calling me "Ron" on the ice. I used to have Ron Hextall's Quebec Nordiques mask and I was really good at swinging my stick! LOL Seriously, I was good at little pokes on the calves in front of my net.

My name is Steve. After a rather bad outing at our annual International ATC Tournament one of my team mates (a defenseman, if that counts) quipped that I played goal like Stevie Wonder. The next year we had new uniforms and stitched across the back of mine was the name "Wonder". That was over 20 years ago. It stuck..............................
