I did not join any leagues this summer due to the expectation of purchasing my first home this spring/summer.
But I am never lacking of summer time phone calls to fill in at all sorts of different skates. I will track them here, both for my personal benefit and for your joyful laughing.

First fill in
WHEN: Wednesday May 7th
WHERE: Woburn, MA
LEVEL: B/C level pick up
GOALS AGAINST: 3
Although this ice time was new to me, the players were not. I had skated with them a bunch of times during the winter. Mostly men in their late 30s - 40s who have played hockey all there life. I, by far, had the better team and the other goal got shelled.
FIRST GOAL: Puck was off the left post. I was stuck there nicely. Looked quick and saw a guy just off the right post with a D-man out in front of me. Player made a nice saucer pass to the player off the right post. I butterfly slide across to other side to cover shot. Player 2 ends up making a quick pass to player 3 in the slot. I had no chance. Maybe overplayed the pass across (pushed to hard) but not much I can do.
SECOND GOAL: Again, player 1 off my right post. Made a nice saucer pass to player 2 off the left post. Player 2 hammered it home. I dove across on this one because I tried to intercept the pass with my stick but missed so I was out of position.
THIRD GOAL: Player 1 picks up puck and throws it to guy out front. Everyone stops except the guy with the puck and me. 4 dekes later he scores. I count it because everyone may have stopped on the play but I still tried to stop him.
SUMMARY: It was one of those skates that every puck I saw hit me in the chest, gut or pads and I handled the rebounds nicely. They shot a lot wide but I challenged a ton to use my size to cut down a lot of the angle. No real spectacular saves, just solid goaltending (for once).

WHEN: Tuesday May 27th
WHERE: Burlington, MA
LEVEL: B Level League Game
GOALS AGAINST: 5 (Won 8-5)
I filled in for my brothers team last night. Havent played in a couple weeks so I was excited.
FIRST GOAL: Pass out in front to open slot man. He kind of flubbed it but it made it just under my pad.
SECOND GOAL: After losing the puck on a 3-0 (this team had some bad players) they recovered the puck out in front and scored on a shot that I should have stopped.
THIRD GOAL: Player iced the puck towards me on the right side of the net. Two players were coming down for it so I played it. Ended up trying to go cross ice to my brother but the forechecker got a piece of my pass and the puck trickled out in front of the net. He went around the net. I dove at it. He won.
FOURTH GOAL: Player went to ice puck but it ended up about center ice. My D-men decided just to let the guy go in on his own (as they do when we are up) He made a left to right move and shot back glove side. I got a piece with my glove but not enough to stop it.
FIFTH GOAL: Defenseman let this guy go by him at the blueline. He came in and across the crease from left to right. I over committed to the shot and had to reach out and put the paddle down. Puck hit padle and went in.
SUMMARY: There was no flow to this game at all. The other team was very low level and had maybe 2 guys who were ok. The zamboni broke so we skated on crap ice for the first period until it was fixed. They did the ice in between the first and second. I did not see a lot of shots so I could not get into the game. Every shot seem to be crappy. Not powerful, not aimed, just getting the puck towards the net.
HIGHLIGHTS: The other goalie let in a slapshot from our blueline. One of our D-men has a crazy shot and usually does this once or twice a year. I felt bad for him because it skipped over his pad.
BEST PART OF NIGHT: Going to Chilis after the game for more beer (ran out in the parking lot) and food!

must be nice to play early enough to go to Chili's after running out of beer in the parking lot. When we get done drinking ie. run out of beer, it is like 330 am.

8:50 game. They do have 11:10 games every so often. Those suck.

WHEN: Wednesday June 11
WHERE: Burlington, MA
LEVEL: A/B Level League Game
GOALS AGAINST: 10 (YES 10) ((YUP 10)) Lost 10-8
Got a call from my old league at 9:45 needing a goalie for the 11:00 game. I said "Sure, no problem". There was a problem.
FIRST GOAL - TENTH GOAL: I know I usually break down every goal but I really dont feel like it. They all went pretty much the same. Breakaway, goal. Breakaway, goal. Short handed Breakaway, goal. Shot, save, rebound, goal. Breakaway goal...You get the idea.
SUMMARY: My first 3 out of 5 saves were highlight real. On a Breakaway (yes another one) he deek like 6 times and finally got me down and tried to stick it low stick side. I got the paddle down and stopped it at the crease. Made a glove save on a 2 on 1 and another solid stop on yet another 2 on 1. Then **** happened. I sucked, the team sucked. Just sucked.
HIGHLIGHTS: Blah
BEST PART OF NIGHT: When I got off the ice.
RETROSPECTIVE: I am starting to think that not taking on a league this summer is going to kill me. I felt like crap. My fundementals were there but just not on point. Every move was either to little or to much. I am usually able to stop most breakaways just do to my size but not tonight. No one tried to deek in close, they shot, whcih was smart because as I best put it between the second and third period "I couldnt catch aids if I wanted to." Yup, that kind of night.

WHEN: Tuesday June 17th
WHERE: Burlington, MA
LEVEL: B Level League Game
GOALS AGAINST: 8 (Won 10 - 8)
I filled in for my brothers team again last night.
FIRST GOAL - EIGTH GOAL: Real crappy again. Just not in the flow of the game. Saw 2 shots in the first period, let one in.
SUMMARY: I need to play more. Atleast once a week, two would be good. Although I felt better thatn the last game, my entire game is off. The worse thing is I am comparing all these games to when I was playing 3 times a week and on fire. Playing here and there really hurts me and I am regreting not joining a league this summer.
HIGHLIGHTS: Kid on the other team punched the ref and got thrown out. WTF.
BEST PART OF NIGHT: Celtics beating the lakers by 39 points.

WHEN: Monday June 23rd
WHERE: Acton, MA
LEVEL: B League
GOALS AGAINST: 4
Another call from one of my brothers teams. Never skated with any of these guys or at the rink. It was a really small rink. Only about 6 feet between the net and back boards and really low ceilings. Kind of freaked me out a little.
FIRST GOAL: 11 seconds in. :D Center takes the face off and heads towards me. Goes right, steps over the line and takes a slapshot. Dman sticks his stick out to block it and does but it then goes cross ice to a wide open winger. He bears down on me quickly and roofs it.
SECOND GOAL: 2 on 1 and they kind of stopped. Player got it in between the face off circles and took a slapshot. I got it with the glove but it flipped over and in.
THIRD GOAL: Another close in slapper that I took with the blocker. He was my left so the rebound went up in the air and then dropped right in front of the crease. Center tapped it in.
FOURTH GOAL: I forgot but I will remember.
SUMMARY: For being in a new rink with new guys I did fairly well. Probably my best outing of the summer so far. I think this has to do with the fact that I have played 3 straight weeks. I may play for them next week too.

Havent updated in a bit.
Summer is over. I am fat. I need to get back into shape. Apparently drinking on the beach all weekend does not help your game. Where I have never been happier, I have never been fatter than I am now. To much vacationing with the family has led to large quantities of boose and meat being consumed. I had a lot of fun the summer but my game really struggled.
Coming off a great winter I am afraid of how this will affect me going back into my real hockey season. Suppoe to be trying out for a new league too. We shall see how that goes.
Sincerely,
Plumpy McPlump
