Battram Fury pad review

What I ordered:
Battram Fury pads. Fury Graphics in Black, White, Navy.
31.5” with additional 3” in the thigh rise.
Calf wrap on the outside of the leg channel.
All nylon strapping w/ Quick release buckles.
Leg channel empty except for the knee locking system.
Sliding Toe Bridge.
Single Bootstrap

First impressions:
When I opened the box, the following thoughts crossed my mind.

Super Light. I think the combined weight of the Pads, Boxes, and the superfluous amounts of box tape that Scott used, came to a total weight of < 7Kgs (Approximately <14lbs).
Thin. I’m used to a 12” pad. These looked like they were toothpicks. It just looked… Different.
Tall. Tallest pad I’ve ever worn. Coming from a 32” pad, the extra 3” plus being thinner makes them look really tall.
Design came out better than I imagined. I used the Standard Fury design. I was skeptical since I have seen nobody with it yet. I tinkered around for nearly 2 weeks with the colour combination. In the end, these are probably the best looking pads I’ve seen. I like the design far more than I liked the RBK PS1 design and I loved those.
The Build quality felt impeccable. Seems were lined up near perfectly. Nothing felt loose. All the stitching upon inspection was tight and all loose ends were perfectly done. It looks like someone put a lot of attention and detail into creating the pads. And I’m sure that Scott does.
Damn, Those are a lot of straps!. Bootstrap, 3 Calf straps, 3 around the knee / thigh area and an additional strap for the thigh boards (which have their own quick release nylon strap instead of cheap Velcro. GREAT touch!). I was worried that it would take forever to figure out how to strap these up.

First Wear:
I took the pads home and started to get to work on the strapping conundrum. I unclipped everything. Loosened everything up a bit and strapped them to my legs. Throughout the next hour I played with every strap hundreds of times. I knew that the nylon straps would take a bit of time to get to the right length, but once I found what was comfortable, I never have to play with them again. Regardless, once the straps were loosened properly (I wear them REALLY LOOSE) I did some carpet flies. My knees lined up perfectly in the knee locks and the rotation was comfortable. My knees and legs didn’t feel torque and there is plenty of support under the knee.

On the ice:
My first time wearing these on the ice came while doing the GSBB meet that was held on Monday. Skating and puck drills hosted by Dave Wells (The Wall33) with Guest appearance of Keeks. I expected to fall on my face. Stumble over the added 3” thighs, and generally look like a buffoon on the ice. Suffice it to say, I still looked like a buffoon, but not due to the pads. Skating was easy. Easier than even in the old 12” pads that were only 32” tall. Gone was the annoyance of the inner corners of the thighs bumping with every skate. I could bring my legs closer together in a standing position and give myself even greater range of motion when trying to skate. I can even come close to crossing over while wearing them. The added height did not hinder the motion at all and almost felt like it wasn’t there.
Overall the pads were very comfortable. With the proper strapping and length of the toe ties, I encountered very little Torque of muscles and rotation into the butterfly was almost perfect the first time. These pads are very flexible. Out of the box they were able to maintain a fairly curvy “S” shape, that with bending has grown more significant. This is absolutely beneficial for us narrow butterfly style goaltenders. Be carefull sliding though. I do not have a strong butterfly slide, however I found that these pads absolutely glide across the ice as if it were on a sheet of butter. I went flying further than I ever had before (Just ask Wellsie). I've now worn them to 1 training session and 2 shinny games

Overall:

An amazing pad. Scott has an absolutely remarkable product that has lived up and surpassed the hype that I had built for it. I’m happy with the pads and I’m sure they will last me a long time due to impeccable build. With almost infinite customizability due to Battram’s efforts, I’m positive there is not a goalie who wouldn’t find themselves at home in a pair of Battram’s.

Recap

Pros
Light
Flexible
Customizability
Easy to modify
Comfortable
Quality Built
Superb graphical design.
Incredible slide.

Cons:
Landing gear feels a little “Small” in comparison to some of the other big names
A LOT of straps! (I believe their removable though… need to play around)
Landing gear gets caught up in my pants. (Probably need to look at getting shorter pants)
Don’t actually make me a better goalie.
Toe Tie string SHould have been Skate lace. I have since replcaed them

Final:
Scott and Tischa. Thank you. Your patience with my delays and my choices was incredible. The constant communication was remarkable. I knew when the pads started, when they were finished. How they were coming and opinions on sizing and design that they believed would help me. A perfect score on your customer service and your efforts in ensuring I got what I wanted.

Did you find that the boot on these was flexible enough for on-ice play right out of the box? It's looking like mine might arrive on either the day before or the day of a game. I'll be dying to wear them but my biggest obstacle with any new pad has always been a stiff boot hindering skating. It doesn't sound as if this was a problem for you though.

Never noticed. The boot never got in the way or was a hinderance.

That's pretty much exactly what I was hoping to hear. You didn't do any extensive flexing of the boot at home before taking them on ice for the first time?

not at all. in fact, I got them home, Next day I skated on them and they felt natural right away. The thigh was a little stiff and straight at that point, but i've flexed that out now.

BoltThrower,

I got my pads last Friday afternoon. Thinkered with the straps for about 35 minutes. Got on the ice Saturday at 7:00 am. I had no issue whatsoever with flex in the boot area. My only issue was that the way I strapped the pads prevented me from getting consistant rotation of the pads when going down. Since I play mostly stand up, I lived with it. I have already modified the strap set-up for this Saturday. Good luck.

one recommendation i'd make

Take out a knee stack! helps immensely especialyl standing up.

wow, Came back to this thread just now; 3 years later. Guess it's time for a fallow up, i may have never done.

Well, I'm stil using the pads. I never expected that. I figured i"d be buying new pads regularly and become a gear whore. But that never happened. I got really comfortable with them. I have easily put over 200, if not 300 ice times on them since i bought them. I was playing 5 times a week!

They have held up very VERY well. for strapping, I have removed a lot of them. They were useless for me because I wear them so loose anyways. One Calf strap, running from the top hook to the bottom. two of the knee straps, and the Thighboard strap. One boot strap as I had requested, And i wear it as tight as it goes.

Wear and tear wise? a magic eraser later and they look pretty damn clean and new. there's some softening of the pad. they flex like crazy now, which has only made them easier to use. The boot break flexes excellently with my feet to seal ice.

The leg chanel is exactly the same as the day I got it. Without anything excess in there, there's very little to knock against it or break it down.

The knee lock is where the pads have changed the most. I had to take out a knee stack from the stock setup. 3 stacks were too tall. they bumped when skating, and when i droped, I got under rotation as my knees fell in the seam between the stack and the padface. But with one stack missing, flawless butterfly that has gotten better. i gues throughout time, constant impact has compressed the place i land into a lil bowl. And i hit it every single time. it is extremely comfortable.

The only thing that is truly wearing away is the Velcro on the knee lock. the inside side of it, has lost it's "stickiness" and the knee strap barely holds on anymore. There's been no stretching of the knee strap. I should fix this, but i'm lazy ;)

I now have the matching gloves too!

here are some game time photos of the pads still in use. You can see they look pretty good still!
