View Full Version : I don't know why I bother! Drop-in woes

So league is over. I have to play somewhere right? Might as well go see if I survive a drop-in as goalie. Only about five guys on the ice at first, warming up and waiting for everyone else to show up. I'm the only goalie so far. I have one guy at my right face off dot sending wristshots at me, perfect. He not trying to win the cup just warming me up, I like this guy. Meanwhile, knucklehead monkey lover is drifting aimlessly around the left circle waiting for his chance to prematurely end my session. I turn right to face Cool Hand Luke and he pops one right to my blocker, I deflect it to the corner and turn my head left. Just in time to see K.M.L. let rip his pathetic excuse of a slapper. (yeah, the one time he actually gets it anywhere). I have no chance, that stupid dude got me right on the side of the knee. What the hell was he thinking! Dammmmitttt! I lay there for a few, drag myself to the bench and dry heave in the trash for a few more. Nothing broken so play the next hour with my best stand up goalie impression. No revenge ensued and I don't want to kill the guy, he just doesn't know any better. And I am convinced he will never learn. The shot ripped my spandex pants though, and drew blood. I thought that was cool, (yes in the most juvenille way it was cool!). Still a bit swollen after two days, but I'm sure Its fine. I never thought I would ever say this but I can't wait for the college guys to come back!!

Sounds like you need Luke "Stick Nazi" kid from the clinic to teach you the classic moves of Billy Smith, Marty Turco and Ron Hextall.

1) - Full swing hack to the knee

2) - Full swing hack to the back

3) - Two handed stick across the nose

Ripped your pants, drew blood? Jeebus. Doesn't know any better or not... you should have leveled him.

^^^^^Agreed! Thankfully you only sustained a flesh wound, but someone needs to tell him that he can't do that in warm ups or he is going to seriously injure someone.

MG, the next time you are on the ice with this clown, go over to the biggest guy out there, tell him your story, and say you just need him to look at monkey **** while you go over to talk to him. Then go over to said monkey ****, and tell him if he does stupid **** like that again during warm up, that guy over there is going to **** down your throat, then point at the large helper you have. It usually gets the message across very quickly!

I have had my share of idiots who take a shot out of order and end up drilling me. Fortunately, in my age group and with my quality Battram gear (sic!), I usually don't get hurt when it occurs. I do have a ritual during warm up that has helped me stay healthy.

If I know the players, I call their names when I am ready for them. The rest know to stand still or stop whatever they where planning to do. If I don't know their names, I point to them with my catching glove. I never go to next in sequence, rather I alternate left to right so it is never ambiguous.

Having said that, do I still get the errant shot? Yes I do! If I see it coming, I leave the net and skate to the corner, keeping my eyes on the offender. I glare for a few seconds and then go back. Nothing said. All the skaters usually get the message. If I don't see it coming, I still go to the corner.

If the same idiot does it again. We move on to phase two. That is when I add CALM communication to the idiot.

A third strike by said idiot automatically qualifies for me skating as fast as I can towards him, and flinging my stick like a boomerang in his direction. I must say it has only happened once but I would do it in a heartbeat again if I had to. When it did happen, the rest of the players took care of the offender.

MG, I hope you heal soon. Knees are always sooo painful...

Damn you, I just spilled coffee all over my keyboard!!!!!!

Serious, I let the knucklehead monkey lover's ( I friggin' love this) just go to the net, and I ignore them. I have about 90 sec. to warm up before the puck drops, and most of the team I play for are KHML's and try to dek the snot out of me on every shot. I just look to the next shooter and completely ignore them. They don't take a shot that hurts me, as they are already behind me when the shot is let go.

I feel your pain, and can confirm that some guys just don't learn. I have one teammate who always, and I mean ALWAYS, shoots his hardest shot of the night during warmup and always when I am dealing with another incoming shot.

I've yelled, I've talked to him nicely, and even explained that he's the only mouth breather who doesn't understand that you don't take a shot in warmup until I make eye contact with the shooter. This has been going on for over 10 years and it's reached a point that warmup somehow almost seems incomplete unless I have to deal with one of his stray shots.

Next time you see him, just don't turn his way during warmup. That way, if he still hits you, nobody will blame you for ripping his monkey loving knucklehead off.

You've never been hit so hard that it made you sick? Consider yourself lucky.

It was a joke....as in, I've been getting needlessly injured in drop in too often.

I think I've taken some pretty good shots in my days of catching and football. nothing serious in hockey just yet. I guess my first instinct isn't to get nautious:confused::confused:

It must be some kind of shock type response? It hit right on bone, I laid there for a few minutes because I physically could not move. Definately not something I enjoyed . BTW- No breakfast = dry heaves!

Anyway, thanks for sticking up for me guys. It's feeling much better!:D
Next time I will not be so nice. So lookout all the Knucklehead Monkey Lovers, your time has come! (Evil laughter.......Here).:D

Surprising a few of these skater types have no concept of warm up manners and though they are to thick to figure it out on their own will comply if told what proper behavior is.

Unfortunately though some will continue to be beyond reason.

i stopped to get a drink during an overly long warm up session prior to a pickup. and while i was standing there i got hit in the head with a slapshot!

the SIDE of my head! it i could not hear out of that ear for like 3 days!

what kind of friggin idiot takes a slapshot at a goalie while they are drinking?

Well, I took a slapshot (I played out when the other goalie was in goal and vice versa) to warm up and I happened to get behind it good because it hit my goalie in his heartguard thing on his Simmons chest protector. He almost fell over and had to sit out for a few shots. I didn't mean to hit it so hard... but I can't say I'm innocent of never doing anything stupid in warm ups.

When I'm in warm ups, I'll take a couple deke shots, but I always have these kids that want to deke every shot, so I eventually just don't take their shot. They yell at me saying they need to warm up, I tell them to shoot at the boards, this time is for me.

I hate when they take shots at me when there is a guy behind me fishing pucks out of the net. I put my arms out to the sides as if to say "Don't take shots, I'm not going to try cause there's someone behind me" and they take them anyways.

If there is someone behind you fishing the pucks out they shouldn't be shooting anyway. Not just for your safety but for that players safety as well. A forward isn't wearing gear made to face shots and if they are preoccupied removing pucks from the net they aren't likely to see a shot that my be coming at their head.

Personally I could care less about the guys that skate in and want to deke me first shot. They are easily dealt with as I just ignore them. They don't need me to react to them for them to warm up. They should be trying to pick corners anyway.

A lot of the problems that occur during warm ups could be solved if shooters would pick their heads up and look at the goalie before shooting. Most of the time if I take a shot off the back of my leg or the like it's because the shooter didn't take the time to look to see if I was ready to face the shot.

Head shots are another matter. You will always have that beer league hero who thinks he needs to hit the waterbottle, but if I've got someone like that on my team I talk to them. If they don't listen, I skate out of my net when they come in. Eventually they get the point.

If I'm skating with my own team I like to brief them at the beginning of the season on how I would like to be warmed up. When it comes to pick up, that's another matter. With all different levels of skill and experience you can usually bet that someone on the ice will be idiot. In the case of someone taking dangerous shots on me I'll either say something to them or just step out. Its only pick up after all. If I don't see a bunch of warm up no big deal. I'm not playing for score and I dont' have to be in net to warm my muscles up. Keeping myself safe is my main priority.

Well I played last night for the first time since that knee shot. To bad it was drop-in, I had the best game yet! I had all the patience in the world and was making saves I had no business making! It was fun again, thank god! I only took one stupid shot all night. This one guy I play with all the time "no pass paul", :p wound up a slap shot with all he had from the hash marks. I was expecting it from him though because the guy has two moves, dribbling the puck cause he never passes or a slapshot. Thats it, seriously. Anyway it hits me right in the mouth, pops my mask right straight up in the air. It popped off the two bottom snaps and one top strap. It didn't hurt me so we all had a good laugh and everyone took turns calling him names and making him feel like an asshole.
Luckily it didn't break my mask, that sucker is only a few months old!$$$$

A few weeks ago in an organized pickup game, 20 skaters and 2 goalies in the warmup I am getting pucks out of the net when all of sudden a wrister to the back of my calf. I actually wanted to kick this guys ass and it turns out to be a friend of mine. He apologized the whole game and sent me an email saying he has never done anything like that before. Even the good guys have that dumbass moment.

Glad to hear the drop- in went well Margoto. Remember the old female goalie adage ," Hell hath no fury like a woman goalie scorned ".

Thankfully, all of the teams I play with have the warmup routine done pretty well. They know to start of with wrist shots and then progress to slapshots and breakaways.

However, drop-in is always another story. Beside people shooting when you are not looking, I love the first shot breakaway attempt. I still do not understand what they are thinking sometimes.

Most guys I skate with tend to be good about warm-ups.

If there are any knuckleheads taking bombs, headshots or 1st shot breakaways I just skate out of the crease every time it's their turn - they figure it out pretty quickly.

Last person that hit me in the back needed help getting their jersey back over their head http://www.conceptart.org/forums/images/ca_smilies/advanced/smiley_devil.gif

You got a few winners to play wif...
Ever been hit so hard by a shot it breaks a lexan protector in 3 pieces?? Or during the warm up round, get hit on the side of the helmet-right on the ear...it rings like nothing else does.

Glad to see you had a good game!

Most teams have no clue how to warm up a goalie. I have been playing out for five years, and I just figured it out within the last two. When I skate out, in the the locker room, I ask the goalie in front of the whole team how they want to be warmed up. After all this my team still thinks the way to warm a goalie up is to do break aways.

lol when teams start off right away with breakaways I just stand straight up and skate out of the crease... I come back next shot and if they do it again I repeat.... normally after that they start putting some shots on me and then at the end I will do about 5 breakaways and then go the bench to meditate before the game starts...
