I've been having a lot of pain in my right hip. It's been forcing me to limit my time on the track and get my cardio fix on the stationary bike (yuck!) I have a friend at one of my jobs who is training to be a masseuse. He's offered to help me out with it, but I'm unsure if it would help, hurt, prolong the healing process or have no effect.

Any thoughts?

I used to go get sports massages.

i dont think they raelly helped in the long run with any serious issues

However, They feel good. They loosen the muscles up and help get out knots. If that is what you need, then they help

They will NOT cure nor fix injured muscles

I used to go to massage therapists all the time due to back tightness... I went bi weekly or sometimes weekly to try and get rid of it. The massages always helped for a day or two, but it's the underlying issues/causes that need to be worked out to truly prevent the back issues I was encountering.

Ultimately, what worked for me was going to Yoga regularly. It's much cheaper then a massage and really gets to the root of the problem much better.

I would explore trying Yoga for your problem, sounds to me like it might help you out.

First off....
sports massage, registered massage therapy, masseuse, spa massage, massage, therapeutic massage, masseur, massochist.... etc...
ARE NOT SYNONYMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

secondly... a good massage therapist (registered) should be able to identify and treat your problem. This will probably even hurt a bit as they are addressing specific issues.A spa massage will feel good and be over priced. A sports massage may be anything in between.
Regardless... none of them can legally "diagnose" your ailment. (legally;)).

A good registered massage therapist (RMT) should be able to help you, if not by treating you, then at least by referring you where you need to be.

Yoga is great... I highly recommend it. You just may need to get some treatment done before hand for it to be more effective. ( I see it as a fantastic preventative measure as opposed to a reactionary treatment or therapy.)

cheers:)

edit:
oops... back to the original post:
talk it over with your friend... what year is he in? how much experience? do they sound like they have any clue what it might be?
best bet is to see a sports med specialist... chiro, physio, md, cat, rmt.
once you find out what it is, then maybe your friend can help treat it (if OK'd by other practitioner).

also... the bike isn't always the best alternative... find out what you have wrong before picking alternatives to your normal routine.

all the best.

Cure? no.... nothing will "cure" injured muscles.
Marinade? maybe.

seriously, though...
injured muscles change in terms of fibre layout... you can't "cure" them.

RMT's most certainly CAN treat and help heal injured muscles. (read "fix").
